Biog - October 2007
Uniting Nations – Paul Keenan and Daz Sampson – broke through at the end of 2004 with the massive UK and international hit Out Of Touch. During 2005, they become one of the major forces in mainstream dance music with two more hits and a string of successful remixes. 2007 sees their long-awaited return with an outstanding new single and its iconic accompanying video.
Paul and Daz met in the strangest of circumstances back in 2001. Paul was a bobby on the beat for Strathclyde Police (which was still his day job until 2006 when he quit to concentrate on the new Uniting Nations album). Daz was visiting Glasgow on a friend's stag do and was about to relieve himself against a wall when he felt the stern arm of the law on his shoulder – Paul, advising him he was about to commit an offence. Daz turned on the legendary Sampson charm and before they knew it, they were chatting away – about dance music. Daz was itching to get back to making dance records and so was searching for a writing and production partner who could match his ambitions. Paul had just invested in a top-of-the-range mixing desk and was looking for collaborators to put it to good use.
Then, in early 2004, they struck gold with their cover of Out Of Touch, inspired by Daz hearing the Hall & Oates original on the soundtrack to Grand Theft Auto III: Vice City. Days later, Daz and Paul's version was being played on dance shows nationwide, then worldwide, sparking a bidding war that was won by Gusto Records. Uniting Nations was born – a name chosen partly because of the frequent journeys from England to Scotland, and partly because it became clear that DJs everywhere would be united in their support for the record.
The single spent an unprecedented 13 weeks bobbing up and down in the UK top 20, peaking at no. 7 but selling over 100,000 copies and receiving over 20,000 plays on UK radio. It was also a hit in Ireland (top 5), Norway, Holland (top 10), Belgium, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Switzerland (top 30), and enjoyed airplay and compilations success in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and beyond. Eastern Europe particularly embraced Uniting Nations, with no. 1s, massive airplay hits, and sellout gigs in Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Estonia, Latvia, and elsewhere. PA dates and DJ sets became a huge part of what Uniting Nations do, with Paul and Daz establishing a great Uniting Nations DJ team that can be seen playing all over Europe.
Uniting Nations have a remarkable record as remixers – the majority of the UK singles they have produced or remixed have gone top 20 or higher, including Pump It Up by Danzel, Object Of My Desire by Dana Rayne, Star 2 Fall by Cabin Crew, Listen To Your Heart by DHT, From Paris to Berlin by Infernal, Fill My Little World by The Feeling, Party All The Time by Sharam, I Think We’re Alone Now by Girls Aloud, and of course their own three hits – Out Of Touch, You & Me and Ai No Corrida.
Unusually for dance producers, Daz and Paul are also good old-fashioned songwriters. Having launched with a cover, they bucked the trend as their second hit was an original song – You And Me. Their songs have since been covered by the likes of Dana Rayne and new Swedish artist Cam Tyler.
Inspiration for their new single struck when Daz stumbled across some seventies footage of Gloria Gaynor performing Do It Yourself (he was searching YouTube for some DIY advice at the time). So Daz and Paul sampled the Gloria Gaynor chorus, wrote a new verse, and Do It Yourself was born, becoming their biggest club hit to date. Then a fan downloaded the track from the Uniting Nations MySpace site and set it to some images of people, er, doing it themselves from the Australian website BeautifulAgony.com, and before long this video was spreading across the internet like a Paris Hilton bedroom adventure. So 2007 sees Uniting Nations back with a bang, and 2008 will see the release of a new album.
