I encourage you all to use cloth shopping bags. Read on:
It turns out 'paper or plastic' is a life or death question
They're ubiquitous. They accompany us home each time we shop. They swirl about our oceans, they cling to our trees, they drift down our city sidewalks, they adorn metal fences, they're consumed by animals. They are an urban tumbleweed, a flag of the consumer era. Each year across the world some 500 billion plastic bags are used, and only a tiny fraction of them are recycled. Most of them will have a short lifetime with a consumer -- they'll be used for the few minutes it takes to get from the store to home and then they're thrown away. But what does "away" really mean? Plastic shopping bags can last up to a thousand years in a landfill. For every bag, there's a cost. Environment California reports that plastic bags, and other plastic refuse that end up in the ocean, kill up to one million sea creatures every year, such as birds, whales, seals, sea turtles, and others. And the number of marine mammals that die each year because of eating or being entanglement in plastic is estimated at 100,000 in the North Pacific Ocean alone. Although bags are given out free these days, they are not without their costs. Retailers in the United States spend $4 billion a year on plastic bags, which gets passed on to customers as higher prices. Plastic bag consumption is causing a global epidemic. The enormous demand for plastic bags ties into the surging global demand for oil -- plastic bags are made from ethylene, a petroleum byproduct. In the United States alone, an estimated 12 million barrels of oil is used annually to make plastic bags that Americans consume.
"Eliminating the use of disposable plastic bags is about more than just the environment," said Barger, "it is about health, sustainability, economics and focusing on what kind of quality of life we want." A growing list of communities and countries are beginning to rethink their dependence on plastic bags. Already a complete or partial ban on the bags has been approved in Australia, South Africa...Bags are also taxed in Sweden and Germany, and are set to be banned outright in Paris this year.
And in March the city of San Francisco became the first major municipality to ban the use of plastic bags, and nearby Oakland has followed suit. Let's go green!
I also am interested in informing others about the issues that are hidden by mainstream media, and I'm saddened that freedom of speech and other fundamental, constitutional rights are often not granted in this so call land of the free.

On October 22, the administration submitted a request for a further $45.9 billion in war-related spending for fiscal year 2008. This request is on top of $147 billion already requested for the Department of Defense and $3.7 billion for other agencies for the fiscal year. If appropriated by Congress, the vast majority would be spent on Iraq. Total spending for the Iraq War would rise to around $611 billion.

(RED) CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GLOBAL FUND TOP $45 MILLION
$30 million of (RED) funds already invested in AIDS programs in Ghana, Swaziland and Rwanda
“I am amazed and humbled by the impact that (RED) consumers have made in a year.” said Bobby Shriver, co-founder and chairman of (RED). “The shoppers who’ve chosen (RED) and the companies who’ve turned (RED) are heroes. Each individual’s decision is saving the lives of more than 30,000 AIDS patients in Rwanda and Swaziland today and ensuring that HIV-positive pregnant mothers receive the medicine they need.”
This month, more than $7 million of the $45 million flowed to the third Global Fund-(RED) grant, an investment to help finance national AIDS programs implemented by the Ghanaian Ministry of Health. With this latest disbursement, (RED), through Global Fund-financed programs, has invested more than $30 million in AIDS programs in Rwanda, Swaziland and Ghana.
“(RED)’s contribution of $45 million to the Global Fund in the short period since it was launched in 2006 means that private sector contributions to the Global Fund are at a completely new level,” said Dr. Michel Kazatchkine, executive director, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. “(RED) has shown that it is possible to do good business while also doing good. It gives consumers a way to really impact upon the lives of people affected by AIDS in Africa.”
One hundred percent of the (RED) money received at the Global Fund flows to Global Fund-financed programs. The Global Fund selects grants for (RED) investment based on programs with a proven track record and ambitious targets. In keeping with the Global Fund’s philosophy of supporting local solutions, the Global Fund-(RED) grant in Ghana is implemented by the Ghanaian Ministry of Health and helps fund the following in-country services:

If you feel moved to help speak out to shut down Guantanamo Bay, please unite in our efforts to free the detainees.
The 86 Days campaign represents 86 days that separate two infamous dates: October 17th marks the first year anniversary of the Military Commissions Act (MCA) and January 11th marks the anniversary of the first detainee held at Guantánamo Bay. We must protest and organize during these 86 days!
What can I do?
During the 86 Days, there will be activities you can get involved in every month, along with actions that you can take online. We will kick off our campaign on October 17 with public demonstrations, but will follow that with new actions each month:
What can I do right now?
Don't want to wait until October 17 to get started?
Visit the Tear It Down site to sign the petition and get your piece of the action!
Stand Up for the America You Believe In
With your help and passion we look forward to significantly contributing toward the global end of torture during these 86 Days of Action!

When you are feelin like you'd like to buy yourself a new shirt or a piece of clothing as a gift for someone else, and you'd like to get something cool and unique and at the same time have the peace of mind that it's not being made by a 14 year old for 15 cents an hour and instead be trading with those in need of employment, check out Ali and Paul Hewson's clothing line, Edun, Nude spelled backward because of its natural feel.
When you want to buy a gift, please consider buying a water buffalo for a starving family instead of an ipod for your priveledged friend. Please check out Heiffer Project or Church World Service to help needy families around the world survive by providing them the tools and education to sustain themselves with a well, a sewing machine, seeds and shovel instead of buying a shirt or CD for a friend who does not need more luxuries but instead would be honored to have such a meaningful gift be given in their name.

Darfur Now is a movie in theaters soon and is a call to action for people everywhere to help end the crisis in Darfur. . . .In this film, the struggles and achievements of six very different individuals bring to light the situation in Darfur and the need to get involved. From a UCLA graduate in Los Angeles, California, to a Darfurian woman who joins rebel forces, to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, to a United Nations humanitarian on the ground in Sudan, to an internationally known actor and activist, and finally to a community leader in a West Darfur refugee camp, the film portrays the heroic efforts of six people responding to a humanitarian tragedy unfolding before our eyes.

The central objective of the 2007 Sabbath Year is a hearing in the House and Senate and, ultimately, passage of the Jubilee Act H.R.2634. This bill will cancel the debt of approximately 67 impoverished countries in the Global South.
On, Thursday, June 7, 2007, the Jubilee Act was introduced by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL), the original introducers of the legislation in the last Congress.
Have you heard of the Jubilee Act which cancels impoverished country debt; removes economic conditionalities from the cancellation process; mandates transparency and accountability from governments and international financial institutions; and moves forward with more responsible lending practices. If you have not urged your member of Congress to sponsor the Jubilee Act H.R.2634, take two minutes to write your congressmen. Take Action Now!
SERVE SOMETHING GREATER THAN YOURSELF.
IF YOU"RE NOT OUTRAGED, THAN YOU'RE NOT PAYING
Check out the DREAM Act. Please watch this video and if you feel that undocumented youth like these motivated teenagers deserve to be given the opportunity to fulfill their potential and dreams, call your congressmen NOW.

Did you know that Nike shoes are made in Wellco sweatshop in Indonesia, China, and Vietnam, countries with no protective labor laws, where youth age 13-25 work for 80 hours a week in hazardous conditions with dangerous chemicals such as Benzene, get paid .16 cents an hour, are fined if they talk during work, fired if they're pregnant or turn 25, and are emotionally, physically, and sexually abused. Pretty ironic that Nike pays $600 million for
advertisements that empower youth and women when this injustice is going on in their own factory.
Resist mainstream media, uncover the facts, and get up and fight against these wrongs. Americans spend over $10 million on bottled water a year which is not any safer than tap water, is a rediculous .04 cents an oz, way more than gasoline, and is so wasteful when we could be using that money to help make poverty history. Are you a part of the solution or a part of the pollution?
We're bagging rice again on March 1st with Kids Against Hunger, Outreach Africa if you want to help feed starving families in Tanzania, we'd love to try to bag over 10,000 meals. Message me if you want to join us.
I'm going to the Rachel Corrie play tomorrow, the 26th in DM at 2:00. You should consider going. If you can't, please check out her story online.
