If only legendary freedom fighter Marcus Garvey were still around, he’d be reveling in a birthday extravaganza that beats cake and ice cream, as the Eighth Annual Universal Hip-Hop Parade shakes up the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.
Continuing down Marcus Garvey Boulevard to Fulton Street (recently christened Harriet Tubman Avenue), the parade features everything from stilt walkers and marching bands to hip-hop artists and community activists.
Businesses along the route will be getting in festive step by playing music and offering giveaways, since, through hip-hop, this grassroots movement not only promotes social justice but supports the local community. --- the Village Voice NYC Guide Saturday 8/11
