Here's a brief look at USO at Symantec Vision 2008 in Las Vegas. In fact, it's quite brief. Don't blink between :09 and :13 or you'll have missed everything. Feel free to watch the whole thing if you like but USO is the best thing about it. Except, maybe, for the guys playing Guitar Hero near the end.
Influences
Here's the short list: Carl Denson, Greyboy Allstars, Massive Attack, Portishead, Kenny Garrett, Miles Davis, Radiohead. Basically all kinds of music from all over the world.
Sounds Like
An otherworldly blend of down-tempo dub, house, soul, funk, reggae, electronic, tribal and jazz. Maybe the slideshow will help...
In early 2007 Jon Celentano (saxophone/bass guitar) sent out a signal over the airwaves and across the Internet in search of a new musical experience. At the same time, not ten minutes away, Bryan Rosenbaum, a.k.a. DJ Redu (programming, synths, digeridoo) was mulling the idea of a new collaboration. Thanks to a little divine intervention and a well-placed ad on craigslist, these two diverse musical souls connected and have created a unique mix of soul, world, funk, jazz and electronic music: the Universal Soul Orchestra.
Jon and Bryan each wear multiple musical hats: Universal Soul’s basic instrumentation just as a duo consists of saxophone, bass guitar, keyboards and sequenced percussion. Bryan loops bits and pieces of classic and new funk, soul, reggae and electronica to create a rhythmic bed. Jon adds the bass to give it a pulse and then layers saxophone melodies that go from earthy funk to acid jazz. Bryan then adds the hypnotic drone of the didgeridoo. The resulting grooves range from energetic, driving dance music to an atmospheric trance-like vibe.
As a duo USO can create music that is improvised live on-the-spot based on the vibe and energy of the particular event. Or for a more traditional full band sound, Universal Soul Orchestra can be expanded up to a quartet (adding guitar or additional keyboards and live percussion) if the event calls for a larger ensemble.
Universal Soul Orchestra invites you to experience the excitement of this unique sound.
