Influences
Sounds Like
Gulzhan has been compared to many vocalists..Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Isobel Campbell, John Mayers love child and numerous more.
The band sounds like a plateful of Garbage, Oasis, Michael Jackson, Queen, Head Automatica and Pink stirfry with a little Chili Pepper and many secret ingredients from the Universal You spice rack. An individual but memorable audio and visual alternative to most 3 minute readymade offerings that can be found in too many places.
Universal You
Band Biog - Version 1(The formal, cliche ridden typical version )
Band Biog - Version 2 (The true trivia and far more journalistically interesting version is available on our website)
Forming only in mid 2008 lead singer Gulzhan and guitarists Paul and Mark are Universal You.
Taking their name from a song by rockers The Cult, Universal You meld each band members considerably different musical influences to craft pop melodies, rock choruses and shredded metal solos into their own brand of into edgy, anthemic and inspirational rock and pop songs.
Respectful of bands and artists like Queen, Guns 'n' Roses and RHCP’s that don’t stick to the same song formula, Universal You freely admit to taking on different styles and genres allowing cross-over appeal. The new 3-piece line-up contains only a double guitar set-up sprinkled with electronica that enables greater variety in their work.
Last single “Your Sin City” released through their own label (Joesoap Records) found airtime on over 40 UK national radio stations and picked up excellent press and online reviews.
"...acerbic guitar leading to an epic chorus.." – IsThisMusic?
"..dramatic sweeping guitar riffs.." – Daily Music Guide
"..Ooh this is a bit good. .. strident piece of rock/pop.." - Zeitgeist
The band are currently putting the finishing touches to their new album “Mona Lisa” due for release in the summer which will feature both live and studio recordings to prove to the world they sound great in any environment.
As always Universal You continue with a busy gigging schedule to build on their growing fanbase and recently played a London charity gig for writer, actor and ex(!) gangster Dave Courtney.
Universal You have also attracted label interest and have two Showcase gigs lined up for Edinburgh label Un:scein Records and another gig for RCA/Arista following a successful gig for them in November last year. Full gig listings can be found on their website.
“…massive potential…frontwoman Gulzhan is in possession of a truly exceptional voice..”
– UKMusicSearch
"Two rock guitars, a glam frontwoman, computers and big choruses...Universal You!"
- The Sun newspaper article
“..the vivacious, diminutive singer with the big voice..”
– The Scotsman newspaper article
"...no-one coming along on will leave the venue disappointed.."
- Edinburgh Evening News newspaper
"..a fantastic singer..."
- The Daily Record newspaper review
With the sleek, glam image and full on sound it’s no surprise that Universal You have already been compared to the likes of Pink, The Darkness, Evanescence and Garbage
