What have you got planned when the school bell rings on Friday? Microwave chicken tikka for one, endless repeats of Friends on E4 and a cheap bottle of pinot grigio? I don't think so. I've got a far better idea: collar a couple of chums, launch yourself in the general direction of Old Street, sashay gently down City Road to The Eagle, get on the good foot and do the bad thing. Please feel free to drop in and loudly exclaim at the bar, "blimey, Charlie, bless my ears if this isn't the phattest dope ever laid down on wax". Friday nights have been going well, so The Eagle have expanded on my pop shenanigans and Lauren now plays on Saturdays too.

I take my role as quizmaster very seriously and, consequently, I've bought myself a Big Book Of Facts. It's hardback, with coloured dividers and everything, and contains over half a million facts. Indeed, it has been suggested in some quarters that the internet is now largely defunct. It's £1 to enter, I will ask you 40 questions from my Big Book Of Facts and, if you know more correct answers than anyone else, you will win money. It really is that simple. Woof.

:{A BRIEF HISTORY OF UNPLANNED AFTERNOONS}:

What do you usually plan for your Sunday afternoon?
Not a lot? Same here.
It’s a tricky one – the lazy void between a Saturday night hangover and the back-to-work fear. After Hollyoaks, but before Match of the Day 2. Let me tell you a story.
It was a sunny Sunday afternoon and Prolix didn’t have anything planned so, when The Smackmaster Generale phoned, that’s what Prolix told him. And, that he’d discovered a patch of mould under his living room carpet. The Smackmaster Generale didn’t have much planned either, so little indeed, that coming round to see a patch of mould qualified as entertainment.
Thankfully, the afternoon didn’t end there. Booze was bought, some more friends rolled up unannounced, tunes were played and, out of nowhere, a party was in full flight. At 4pm.
Unplanned Afternoons was born, logically enough, by accident and now we’re taking it out of the living room and into The Eagle. It’s a home from home where you can dress up, or dress down; shake your tailfeather, or take a load off; get back on the horse, or have a nice cup of tea.
Musically, think of Unplanned Afternoons as your mildly eccentric friend, letting you idly thumb through their vast record collection and discover all manner of curious delights. Old stuff, new stuff and somewhere inbetween stuff, it’s the songs you love and never get to hear, plus new tunes you won’t be able to live without.
We’re here to unplan your afternoon and make the world a simpler place.

The Alex is a great old boozer, erstwhile home of Unplanned Afternoons and also where I've played on NYE for the last three years. And, the west-facing french windows upstairs make it a great place to watch the sun go down over Clapham Common. We're taking advantage of the bank holiday to kick off on a Sunday this week but, with average luck, this should run every Saturday over the summer, except when I'm at a wedding/Glastonbury/deportment class/ferret rustling derby/etc. Plus, the Prolix mobile disco has just returned from the garage with blacked out windows and bulletproof doors, so we should be sufficiently tooled up to venture into dirrrty sarf.

Not just a birthday party, but a leaving bash too. If you're chums with Tony Rebel and/or Ellie Norris, and you wish to raise a glass before they disappear to Australia and Brighton respectively, you better get on the good foot and do the bad thing.
NOW WE ARE TWO
Almost exactly six years ago, Unplanned Afternoons' gestation began on a sunny Sydney afternoon when The Smackmaster Generale came round to The Towers to see a patch of mould under my living room carpet. Inauspicious beginnings, you may think, but booze was bought, some more friends rolled up unannounced, tunes were played and, out of nowhere, a party was in full flight. At 4pm.
In March 2005, the Club Together appeal for the Boxing Day Tsunami gave us the idea to take UA out of the living room and into the real world. 24 unplanned afternoons later, the simple idea of enjoying good music, with good people, for a good reason hasn't lost its appeal. If you can raise several thousand pounds for over 20 charities whilst having a lot of fun, why wouldn't you?
With this in mind, it's time to dive headlong into our terrible twos with a right good knees-up, in the shape of a TEN HOUR FREE PARTY featuring a whopping line-up of eight DJs, drawn from the ranks of the Unplanned Allstars who've been keeping this ship afloat for the last two years. And, if you're chums with Tony Rebel and/or Ellie Norris, and you wish to raise a glass before they disappear to Australia and Brighton respectively, you better get on the good foot and do the bad thing.
We're here to unplan your afternoon and make the world a simpler place and, as always, everyone is playing for free so all the money can be donated to charity which, this month, is…
:{FRIENDS OF THE EARTH'S 'THE BIG ASK' CAMPAIGN}:
www.thebigask.com
If you saw The Observer last week, there was a free CD featuring a host of great artists [and Razorlight] supporting Friends of the Earth. 'The Big Ask' campaign is about tackling the biggest question the world faces - how do we stop dangerous climate change? The most important part of the question is - Is the Government doing enough? Friends of the Earth think they should do at lot more. And 70% of the public agree.
