About me: I was born in Newark, Delaware, to a Greek father and a West Virginia County Girl mother. I had a pretty eclectic group of influences growing up. Mom listening to Johnny Cash and the Platters, and Dad listening to older and modern Greek Music and classic rock.
I graduated to punk rock and metal in high school. I was heavily influenced by Ian McKaye both in Fugazi and Minor Threat, The Dead Kennedy's, Sepultura, Metallica, etc. I moved on to the Rave scene when I moved to Pittsburgh in 1997 to attend the University of Pittsburgh.
As it turned out, this was like the peak of the east coast rave culture, and I feel like I experienced it first hand. Going to parties from Toronto, to New York, Washington, Baltimore, New Orleans and elsewhere.
Like a lot of kids that followed this same pattern, I ultimately decided electronic music was too cool and I had to try playing it. I had tried guitar, bass, drums, flute and piano as a child, but without any real success or feeling for the instrument. I just knew I loved music and I wanted to be a part of it somehow.
I started off playing trance (yes I admit that) in the fall of 1999, but like before I didn't have much feeling for the music. However, I had been getting more and more into drum and bass, and I asked a friend who played dnb to lend me a few easy records to learn with.
I went home that day, put the first record down (some dj Ital record) and cued up the second (dj zinc remix of finder's keepers) in the headphones. I let it go and listened to the breaks on both sides, and truly felt like I knew exactly what to do. For the first time in music it was clear to me what to do.
Well from that day in the Winter of 1999 until today, I have continued to play drum and bass. I have had the opportunity to play some great venues like Fuze in Pittsburgh and Sonar in Baltimore. I have also had a lot of fun playing at more unconventional events like an exhibition opening, and a tattoo convention after-party (held in a small art gallery).
I have always looked at playing drum and bass as a journey, and a bit of a puzzle (how do I get out of this record in the next 2 minutes). For the dj its always a question of what the crowd will react to, what will sound good with the sound system, and where you are planning to go from here? If I do my job, those efforts will be communicated to the people listening, often without them even realizing it.
Aside from dnb, I make my living as a lawyer in Maryland, I ride dirt bikes in my free time, and travel often to Greece, and now Brasil.
Feel free to download a mix in my blog above.
