The UnXpected started entertaining the crowds in a little neighbourhood bar, Wala Wala. On their 6th year and still going strong. This quartet/quintet rocks the night away with
their repertoire of original songs penned by singer Shirlyn Tan and also a selection
of classic rock and selected pop covers. What sets them aside from other cover
bands is their belief in not blindly following typical crowd- pleasing radio trends,
always passionate about their performance.
In the year 2003 the band recorded a live album of their show at Wala Wala,
to give the crowd something to bring home. Comprising 8 cover songs and
two originals, 'UnXpectedly Live at Wala Wala' has sold out 1000 copies.
Though they did not bring the CD to the shops, they decided the best way to
market the CD would be to sell it at their live shows. The UnXpected
perform regularly at Wala Wala Café & Bar, Balaclava Bar and Timbre.
Showcases at The Esplanade include the Outdoor Theatre, Late Nite
Series @ Recital Studio (UnXpectedly Shirlyn and Newfound Jealousy
an Acoustic Gem) and being the opening act for Jason Mraz
for the Mosaic Festival 2006.
In July 2006, the band backed Shirlyn up in one of Esplanade’s Late Nite
Series @ Recital Studio : ‘Newfound Jealousy An Acoustic Gem’,
featuring Shirlyn's original compositions.
April 2007 saw Shirlyn Tan launching her solo album ‘Newfound Jealousy’
with much help from The UnXpected and other session musicians.
Our regular gig slots are (unless otherwise stated):
Thursdays and Saturdays @ Wala Wala.
Tuesdays @ Balaclava.
Wednesdays @ Timbre Arts House
Fridays @ Timbre Substation

Thanks for the great gig at Wala Wala on Saturday night, that was just too much fun. I had been a bit down recently, so some good music was exactly what I needed to break on through - three sets of unXpected really did the trick. Thanks for playing my requests - Black Sabbath and Rush. Favourites like Queen and Led Zeppelin were as awesome as always, great great great great great!!!! It was also my first time seeing your violinist, that Russian song was fantastic! Something really different.
I loved the way the band sounded so tight. Brandon's stick-throwing antics were an eye-popper! I have got to catch you guys at a proper Walas show one of these days.. CHEERS!
blackstar will be playing a half hour set this thurs for alternation@DXO 11 oct at 9pm, followed by the fucking awesome cigarette sex at 930pm! $12/entry + 1 free drink. do join us for a night of debauchery, political incorrectness and ROCK N ROLL!
Hey guys, we've been recording our songs for our demo and doing it all DIY using a borrowed Line6 Toneport and Ableton Live. :)
I've mixed and mastered 2 songs so far and they're up on our MySpace page, with more to come once I find the time to polish them up, so keep checking back for more new tracks!
It's my first attempt at being producer/sound engineer for the band (having had no prior training) so feedback is welcome!
Hey The UnXpected, cheers for hooking up with me on myspace. How are you doing? I hope you're enjoying my music and remember to stop by and say hello sometime.
