Unzune's Blurbs |
About me:
music has never been so easily shared
Internet is a revolution in music distribution.
the iPod and now the Zune
The iPod was too, it put it all in our pocket, simply. Peer-to-peer networks (Napster, Gnutella, ...) enabled millions of music lovers around the world to discover all the new musics, often illegally, to be listened anywhere, anytime on our iPods or alike.
online music sales are successful
Secured online transactions and digital rights management systems (DRMs) have in that context, whatever ones point of view, made possible an extremely successful online music distribution model.
very successful
This sort of disrtibution and diffusion infrastructure model is very profitable, and not only have the 'majors', but also the electronic makers taken a big share of the pie. It is so obvious that today, even Microsoft has left aside all of his old allies (that relied on the 'Plays for Sure' system) to create a new proprietary platform based on the 'Zune', a sort f iPod clone, in order to get a pie of their own they won't need to share too much, and to compete with the proven model: iPod / iTunes.
but not for the musicians
With the Zune player hype but also with the software suite that comes with it, Microsoft will try to push song exchange, not only with, but also without wire and try to impose, as did Apple with success before, a content rights management system that will lock our music in. It is again said that this is good for the listener. But once again it will leave us out.
Microsoft bypasses the official rights-management entities
Microsoft has just made a deal with Universal, and, through the blog of one of their developers, Cesar Menendez (http://www.zuneinsider.com), says it want musicians to get a better share. But all it does is shortcut the official rights-management societies (e.g. the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in the USA aka ASCAP), and therefore the ones it represents: the musicians.
musicians are not happy-grazing cows
It seems the musicians don't matter much anymore: they are the cows that make the milk, and it looks that while they graze they are happy. As musicians, we must unite at last and show that what remains the most important is the music, not the fantastic gadgets and tools that let you play them.
you are the network, react and let the musicans free
Microsoft entering in such a way the music business is just a symbol, they are not alone. But if we want to change things and get the benefits of digital media too, let's react and unzune! Sites like mySpace.com give us the ability to react in the numbers, so let's use this opportunity.
talk about it, share the unzune, become a friend of the cause
All help, reaction and suggestions are welcome. Forward this profile to your friends and your favorite groups. Talk about it, make yourself a mySpace friend of Unzune ! Who knows, we might be able to make things happen!
