“Woods” started as a working band in early 2008. The band started as a trio, with Bruno Parrinha (clarinets), Miguel Mira (cello) and João Parrinha (drums/percussions), but shortly after João Pedro Viegas (bass clarinet) and Hernâni Faustino (double bass) joined the group.
The band made its’ first appearance in 2008/05/30, in a concert at the Braço de Prata Factory, Lisbon. In August of 2008, Hernâni Faustino left the band, being replaced by João Camões (viola). Since then, this has been the quintet’s basic line up.
“Woods’” interests encompass a wide range of approaches that goes from jazz to electro-acoustic music, including the new reductionist currents, and more organic styles.
“Woods” also gives a special emphasis to improvised chamber music. Their live performances combine interpretations of written pieces, conceived by the members of the band, with free improvisation. They strive to achieve an intimate flow that always plays with the timbre components of the instruments that are being played. “Woods” is an ensemble that values instant composition, as well as micro tonal exploitation and atonality.
Woods have played in venues with Matthew Goodheart, João Lucas, Diatribes, D'incise and João Castro Pinto
