So hey the only door policy you'll find at an Upstart Alley gig is that you don't bring your sexist, classist, racist, transphobic or homophobic attitudes with you.

upstart alley no longer doing shows...sorry folks!! xo
Well folks, Upstart Alley is announcing that we are winding down the hatches and shutting up shop. We have had an absolute blast and been inspired by the energy, love and support of all you dashing folks.
Over the last 2 years we have borne 9 shows to happy, panting crowds, traipsed all around Melbourne in search of the ultimate venue, taken one show to Adelaide, and had the pleasure of putting international, national and local talent on stage. We hope we have provoked, pleased, teased, inspired and moved you (your tooshies, your minds and your hearts) and created spaces where those who might normally feel invisible or excluded are treated like royalty.
So massive thankyous to all you who have come along and partaken in our events as performers, audience, door bitches/bastards, techies, photographers and stagehand crew we salute you in all your brilliance, rockin ways and generosity.
We may be involved in different projects in the future so we will keep you posted via the yahoo email page (those not wanting to stay on this list, or those who are on the genderschmender email list and/or wanting to jump on the upstart list-email us at upstartalley@yahoo.com.au).
We feel there remains a major shortage of accessible, friendly and mixed spaces and events that fuck shit up without excluding or posturing. We hope to continue to help fill these gaps in other ways and guises, and encourage all you out there who feel the same to keep on and start Doin It Yourselves.
Xx The Upstarters Xx
.. ..
Upstart Alley is an ode to all the gender rebels, colorful kids, beautiful freaks, activists, kinksters, femmes and queers who resist and rebel through their bodies, minds and perversities…
We are Melbourne based and have been putting on parties and events over a year or 2 born through feeling frustrated by the lack of radical, truly queer, mixed and politically charged events. Our events are full of bent, pervy performance that aim to push the boundaries and jump start thoughts and libidos, and we are welcoming and celebratory of a range of subversive gender and sexual identities. So we consistently pull a truly mixed, sexy, friendly crowd, and the music and atmosphere is rockin.
Our ticket prices vary depending on the overheads for each show but at Upstart Alley we are committed to keeping ticket prices as low as we can go while still paying performers as decent amount. Any accidental profits go towards covering costs for future shows not into our pockets.
The performances and artforms that grace the stage are multiple and ever changing-from live bands, DJs, cabaret, burlesque, to spoken word and rap-and are generally sordid, unique and provocative.
So far at Upstart Alley we have seen performances from Astro, Billi Lime, Gaylourdes (Syd), Voodoo Trash Dolls Duo - Sparkarella and Mechante Chatte, Wife (Syd), Domino (Syd), Loki (SA), Zoo (Syd), Switch (London/Brisbane), Tomo Boccocinno, Roxy Bullwinkle, Azaria Universe, the Bastard Snowpeas, Madam Cavity, Byrne N Erge (NZ), Pluto Savage (Syd), Juan-Alejandro Lamas (Syd), Maria Zajkowski, bryan Andy, Kaboobie (Adelaide), Wes Snelling, Yumi Umiumare and Kelli Jean Drinkwater! Plus music from trans/queer rockabilly punk band Ikochi (Tokyo), Team Plastique (Berlin/Brisbane), Sista She, The Original Generics, emcee pash, Transylvanian Gypsy Kings, Crazy Horse House Band, The Scowlers, DJ Linx, DJ Lady Lamenta, DJ Tokyo Love Kitten, The Minority, Kapitolina, Husny Thalib, the Vaudevillains, Toupee and The Bad Father (Adelaide).
NB. Upstart Alley will endeavor to hold all shows in wheelchair accessible spaces with wheelchair accessible bathrooms wherever possible. We think it sucks that these are few and far between in Melbourne and continue to campaign for accessibility at venues. Check out Trans Melbourne Gender Project (TMGP)'s Toil/Art -a project dedicated to building awareness around the necessity of gender neutral and wheelchair accessible bathrooms in Melbourne at www.genderproject.net.au
