The Spartanburg Spark is an online magazine, dreaming of becoming an alternative weekly newspaper. We're dedicated to covering arts, news and culture in and around Spartanburg, South Carolina. We also offer regularly updated shows listings and our increasingly comprehensive events calendar. And, of course, our site is updated daily with new content about local news, arts, culture and community.
Like the Spartanburg Spark? Want to support our effort to become Spartanburg's local alternative newspaper? Need a shirt or a coffee mug? Why not visit our new CafePress store?
Who I'd like to meet: Folks from Spartanburg.
The Spark is YOUR website about YOUR community. We need a little feedback to make it, you know, feel right.
First things first: We've started a glorified blog, which we hope will grow into a fully functioning online community resource, which we really want to turn into an alternative weekly newspaper. (One step at a time, right?)
At present, it's a little on the rough side, but we already have a fully functioning club calendar. If we've missed your venue or band, let us know.
Next, we need to get in contact with people who have something to say. You know who I'm talking about -- that guy/girl at the party who has an opinion that just HAS to let everyone know about it. In other words, we'll be looking for columnists, writers and people who are so into their community that they simply can't shut up about it.
Of course, this just scratches the surface. We'd like to include things like locally created comic strips, national-level stories with local ties, essays by any number of local writers, a complete resource guide for local events and shows ... the list can really go on and on. But, in order to make it work, we'll also need some ideas from you.
So, holla back at us, Spartanburg. We want to hear what you've got to say.
as much as i do have thanks for your supporting local bands by advertising their shows and such i do have lots of problems with the so-called "Listening Parties" i really dont find it fair to have a listening party by judging music posted on a myspace site seeing as how many bands are subject to a budget and therefore recordings may not be of best quality because they have to get what they can afford. so as stated in the review of my band, (Senile Sanity) the recordings may be "muddy" or more recently in the band GTA's review, they may suffer for being "live recordings". My point is "Who Cares" a band on a budget is just trying to post something for people to get an idea of what they do and what they're about. Most bands arent as lucky to have recordings like those of local favorites Quarterfly or Dezeray's Hammer, A Vacant Soul and others. It takes time to be able to get to the success those bands have reached. Success many bands dont experience. Also in mind that lots of bands are doing this for fun as well.
all this being said i truely think its only fair to have a true "listening party" by attending an actual show. A place where you can not only "HEAR" but "SEE" what a band is about. Then write a fair review of them.
as i see it now these reviews are not fair and unjust. And mostly seem to be about ripping a band apart as ive seen very little compliments and positive reviews made about anyone you have covered. its easy to sit behind a computer on myspace all day listening bands and then write an opinion about it behind the comforts of the internet world where people become brave.
try actually attending live show first before writting a bogus review. this being said...
I'd love to do some writing for you. I live in Greenville but I'm in Spartanburg a lot with my band as my record label is out of Sparkle City. Haha. I go to a lot of shows and do a lot of things and love to write. I think having alt. papers are important to any local scene.
