Hailing from Dundee, The Law formed initially to write and play songs as a means of venting frustration at birds and bosses. The results – instantly memorable bittersweet stomping songs – show it was well worth the agony. Consisting of Stuart Purvey (vocals), Stevie Anderson (guitar), brothers Martin Donald (drums), and Simon Donald (bass), the band are firm favourites amongst a city finding itself buoyant with rock’n’roll belief and desire.
Early recording sessions produced promising results and a couple of indie single releases in 2007 saw The Law breach the official UK independent charts. This gained them initial recognition with the media, seeing them featured in national music press such as NME, and receiving national airplay on the likes of BBC Radio 1 and the XFM network. The year ended on a high when the band picked up a prestigious Tartan Clef Music Award for ‘XFM best breakthrough act’.
The Law spent the majority of 2008 writing, recording, mixing, and mastering songs for their debut album. The mainstay of the process were the sessions at renowned Sawmills Studios in Cornwall (the birthplace of Oasis’ Definitely Maybe) with producer Stan Kybert (Paul Weller, Massive Attack).
What has artistically emerged since the band’s inception is that The Law have a refined talent for writing swaggeringly confident tunes with sing-along choruses, classy guitar licks and sublime melodies which get right under the skin. Their eagerly anticipated debut album ‘A Measure of Wealth’ is set for release on 28 September 2009 through the bands own label Local Boy Records (distributed by Universal via Absolute).
The first single to be taken from the album - ‘Don’t Stop, Believe’ – will be released on 20 July 2009, has already gained support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, XFM, Clyde, Tay etc.
Live performances by The Law are high energy, often raucous affairs, drawing crowds in with instantly memorable songs and an electric atmosphere, reminding you just how rock concerts should be: loud, packed and sweaty with anthemic tunes and a strong sense of camaraderie .
The Law have been prolific live headline performers in their native Scotland, and several special guest slots with fellow Dundonians The View on their UK tours have introduced the band to a wider audience, as have appearances with the likes of Air Traffic and The Rascals.
With a confirmed slot at this year’s T in the Park festival and more live dates to be announced, 2009 certainly looks set to be a key year for The Law.
