   About Urbana Poetry Slam

GREETINGS! We're NYC-URBANA!!

We are a weekly POETRY SLAM which currently calls the BOWERY POETRY CLUB (in New York City) its home. Urbana rocks it every Tuesday night at the club and are open to all kinds of poets. Admission is $7 (unless its the night of a semifinal, in which case its $10).

We're a QUIRKY ECCENTRIC series which has spent the last EIGHT YEARS dedicated to showcasing the MOST INNOVATIVE VOICES IN POETRY!

We've featured some of the biggest names in poetry: Billy Collins, Patricia Smith, Galway Kinnell, Sage Francis, Saul Williams, and almost every national slam slam champion EVER!!

And yet we remain a warm and humble venue for all kinds of poetic voices: POLITICAL, CONFESSIONAL, MUSICAL ... and yes, even NERDY and HILARIOUS.

Founded by at age 19 by Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz (the youngest slammaster ever!) in the wake of Mouth Almighty Records, the series has actually won the national poetry slam championship a record THREE TIMES (1997, 2000, 2002). And like the Kracken, we are waiting to consume MORE!

If you've never been to a poetry slam, here's what a typical night is like: poets sign-up for the eight-poet open mic (if we have one that night) or the eight-poet open slam (if we have one that night) between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm. At 7:00 pm exactly, all slots are filled randomly by computer. Signing up is not a guarantee that you will be able to read. Sometimes you must be part of the "great audience that great poetry requires."

At 7:01 pm Shappy, our bartender and hilarious emcee, welcomes everyone and facilitates the eight-poet open mic. Without a break, the feature is introduced to perform a 15- to 20-minute set. [Urbana does not book "local" features; our features are all from out-of-town, and most have made a name for themselves at the National Poetry Slam]. After a break (during which five audience members are chosen randomly to serve as judges) the slam begins.

SLAMS: They're competitive, sure, but URBANA SLAMS are also supportive and inclusive. All kinds of poetry are welcome. Memorization is not required (but it totally helps!). Open slam winners read at quarterly semifinal slams in an effort to reach the finals in May.

AND THANKS FOR VISITING!!

Grace is like a large Jamaican woman with a laugh like thunder,
She lives in a two-storey apartment on the quiet side of town, where you visit her at twilight.
No sound can be heard as you approach but the distant sound of a dog barking.
As you climb the steel steps and walk down the hallway, the smell of freshly baked bread comes to greet you, seeping out from under her door.

It redeems what came before.

It draws you closer. It comforts you.

You never get to knock the door because she always gets to it first,
So excited to see you again,
She throws her arms around you and welcomes you in before you can say a word.

You always feel at home here. Wanted like nowhere else.

Her face beams and radiates love.
She reaches down and picks up your baggage.
She places it on the large wooden table in the kitchen,
And slowly she works her way through it.

You watch in silence.
When she gets to the bottom a tear falls from your cheek,
Which she catches with her handkerchief.
She places this in with the contents and closes the case once more.

She smiles tenderly as she picks it up,
And carries it upstairs.
You wonder what it's like up there.

She returns empty handed,
And you raise your fist to strike her,
But she grabs hold of your arm and pulls you in.
She embraces you and you sob like a child once more.

She whispers secrets in your ear.
She walks by your side and guides you.

I first met Grace when I was a young man,
She introduced herself to me with a hug,
And forgave me immediately.

Let her in.....and have a great day - Si

Hope is like a beautiful woman with a kind spirit,
She whispers secrets and dreams in your ear,
She walks by your side and guides you.

She wears a dress the colours of Autumn,
And perfume the scent of Spring.

Her laugh sounds like the pop of a cork from a bottle of champagne.

She is there with you when all others have left,
She sits beside you,
She holds you hand.

Sometimes you lose sight of her,
But she is never far away.

She sings to you a lullaby and visits you in your dreams.

I first met Hope when I was a young boy,
She introduced herself to me with a kiss,
And I loved her immediately.

Seek inspiration.....
and have a great weekend.

Le Slamophone

Aug 14 2008 9:32 AM

Dear Fire Spitter,
Dear Wisdom Speaker,

Our bridge has grown by one more stone !
Please allow me to introduce
the fun inside the Slamophone …

It all started with the idea
that SLAM is too live, too diverse,
each syllable - unsellable,
every ephemerical verse
too fierce to be forced or coerced …
Plus, this new cuisine needs no chef !
Tongues are spinning on every corner,
and French cannot be left for deaf.

So with a camera in hand,
we've taken the country by storm;
videalistic is the spirit,
originality the norm.
We started out with 50 vids,
now we are up to 360,
from Montreal down to Marseille,
from Pointe-à-Pitre to Gai Paree.

Take any door and come on in.
Be curious, you will be served :
360 clips around our way,
360 clicks around the word …
