Music
For the uninitiated; attending "Off The Road," is an experience more thrilling than smashing protons together inside of a Hadron Collider, and probably more likely to have a serious impact on the fabric of the space-time continuum –although let's face it, that really shouldn't be too hard to achieve!-
For example: Traversing whole continent's in the space of just a few chord changes might have previously have been the stuff of science-fiction but FARINO can do this with nothing more than a couple of acoustic-guitars. An eclectic Tour-de-Force of World-Music can be expected from this virtuoso instrumental duo.
As cold-war frontiers reappear again and the Russians have laid claim to oil-reserves situated under the NORTH-POLE, it is fitting therefore that a Hull band of the same name should emerge from a lengthy studio-based career to play one of their first ever live gigs. Cold yet emotive, bruised and desolate yet soulful; the dimly-lit Adelphi might prove to be an ideal setting in which to experience the rise of this musical Superpower….especially if you wish to be spared the sight of grown men crying.
Fresh from his recent barnstorming performance at the Grass Roots Festival near Peterborough, Nick Boldock returns to Off The Road for another electrifying set of confrontational and exciting performance poetry. Except political satire and edgy comedy - strictly for the grown-ups.
ROBERT PHOENIX AND HIS MAGIC MIND may no longer wish to "suck the sock of conformity" but he can still dip his toe in the kind of slick acoustic-soul (practised to greater financial effect by such parvenus as Paolo Nuttini) that has propped up the otherwise moribund music industry so far this millennium, whilst keeping his best foot firmly rooted in the kind of "Out-There" ethereal music/poetry that the 1970's Lou Reed might have heard in his dreams –If only he had ever slept that much back then- A sharp suit and a sharp mind.
The one and only comical genius SAM JONES also returns to "Off The Road" this month treating us to his catchy tunes and lyrical mastery. The planet of Sam is certainly a place to visit and you might not be able to resist singing these tunes here on after, but maybe not in a church.
That the JAMES DEAN SYNDROME have yet to grace the cover of the N.M.E. is a fact almost as implausible as that of their youth –not to mention stamina and fortitude.- To allude only to their purported 60's influences is to do them a tremendous disservice when actual fact they seem to have just as much in common with some of the most adventurous and innovative bands of the last 40 years. However, whether they owe more to the early Floyd, The Pink Fairies or (let's just say for example) The Damned or Sonic Youth (or could even care less about such acts) is frankly neither here nor there. 'Cos when "The Psychedelic Warlords Disappear in Smoke," (copywright Hawkwind 1974) and Scenesters such as M.G.M.T. have left the stage; then surely cometh the hour of the J.D.S.
Now where did I leave my Orgone Accumulator?…
Urban Artz is tired from partying lastnight at Off The Road but damn we are mighty pleased and very proud of a great show from top quality local performers.
I like to Organise music and arts events outdoor and indoor, I am the Coordinator of Urban Artz (Off The Road). So if you know of any ventrilogists, Gurners and any other crazy acts old & new let me know.
Who I'd like to meet: We at Urban Artz are always on the look out for artists working in the fields of original music; spoken word; poetry; comedy, and theatre, for inclusion in forthcoming 'Off The Road' shows (and more...)
OFF THE ROAD BRINGS YOU FREAK OR UNIQUE HOTSPOT TALENT SHOW
Are you old enough to remember the freak or unique show on TFI Friday? If you didn't here's the crack. Off The Road is looking for unique acts for our shows. This could be from gurners to playing a tune on your ribs with chop sticks. You might have a partytrick that is so awesome it gets you laid every time. if you have a bizzare act that doesn't fit into mainstream entertainment than look no more. if we get enough interest we shall be including a Freak or Unique Talent Hot spot to our show on a regular basis. The audience shall be the judges and the best Freak or Unique act of the night gets a chance to perform it again at our next event.
Hi Jayne, yeah I agree with you, only thing is it always takes me a while to work out whether it's the last Friday of the month etc. but then I am from orchard park lol xxx
big thanks janey for inviting us to play last nite. all the artists were great (as usual) and we had a great time playing..the crowd were fantastic:) xxx
Great Off The Road tonight Jayne, well done. I do think it's better placed on a Friday when people don't have to get up the next morning. Do other people agree with me on this? x
