The Urban Jazz Groove was founded in 1992/1993 by Michael Hartung, who was inspired by the upcoming Jazz and Funk-Clubscene in London, where he found a combination of deep grooves and visuals that created an atmosphere before unseen in Bremen's nightlife. He put all his heart and money into making such event happen in Bremen. After different takes on this concept Sebastian Kobs became the first Resident-DJ, whose enthusiasm and knowledge of 60s and 70s Jazz and Funk helped build the foundation the Urban jazz Groove is existing on today. In the last 16 years the Urban Jazz Groove saw a couple of changes in it's location and it's DJ-team. Sebastian Heemsath, Ubeyde Cimen and Gu are three further DJs who devoted their time and money to sharing the love for Deep Funk, Latin Styles, Boogaloo and Souljazz. It was Michael Hartung who kept the club going through the rough times and the good times, as this is his legacy.
Since October 2009 the Urban Jazz Groove is located at the Tower, Bremen every last friday of the month, hosted by the Urban Jazz Groove team. It's aim is to bring back rare and probably long unheard material back to the club-scene. Instead of replaying hits, it is focusing on turning unknown tracks into hits, Urban Jazz Groove hits.
Over the years the Urban Jazz Groove (and it's former side-event Urban Style Music) featured such guests as Keb Darge, Jazzanova, Kabuki, Frank Popp, The New Mastersounds, Rockers Hifi, Jazzman Gerald, Osaka Monaurail, Nick Recordkicks, Henry Storch and many many more.
Michael Hartung passed away in 2005 and we continue to celebrate the Urban Jazz Groove in his name as without him this unique event would not exist and would've not lasted for over 16 years. Everything we do is dedicated to his memory!
