Influenced by David Ellis, founder of High School for Recording Arts (HSRA), and mentored by the school’s Development Director, Tony Simmons, Darryl Young is a special education teacher who uses music to capture the attention of students and inspire learning. Phil Winden, a master producer and original Studio 4 music educator, guides young artist in the studio to gain skills, such as audio engineering, mixing & mastering and more. Together, Darryl and Phil team to encourage students to use the unifying power of music to address issues within their community. The Urban Music Project (UMP) is their musical agent that functions to build knowledge, respect, self-development and self-reliance into the hearts of their students. Students are responsible to direct their Urban Music songs toward their audience with the underlying goal to "Inspire them, Inform them and/or to cause them to Reflect. At first hearing many of the songs on the project may sound negative. However, after evaluating them closely the true purpose of the songs can be discerned. Sometimes the songs are directed to the younger generation to discourage them form choosing a dead end life that leads to misery. And other times Urban Music songs are directed to adults, specifically those in leadership/decision making positions. These students want adults to understand why young people make unlawful decisions. Not that the young artist's want their choices in response to adversity to be view as socially acceptable but through their musical expression they seek to tell the story from a teenagers point of view. Regardless of how their expression is perceived, their songs are honest and a fact of their lives. Special thanks to the humble, phenomenal talent, HC the Chemist, aka Donte Suttle. He's content to stay in the background but by extension of his hip-hop sessions he has produced many of the most fascinating Urban Music songs. Thanks also to those students who gave us songs that were not produced directly by The Urban Music Project but submitted their song because they wanted to support the struggle of changing lives. A thanks also is warranted for Bryan Rossi for all his support. The Urban Music Project Is open to artistically supporting organizations that are making an effort to help the community. Contact Tony Simmons at hsra.org. In Minnesota, go to staff. Tony can coordinate the artist who can meet your organizations specific needs. Our project will also accept donations to help us to continue to make community conscience music. If you want to help, go to hsra.org in Minnesota. Then go to the donation page.
Special Dedication to Wolfie, Rick and Keith, three people no longer with us dedicated to making a difference in young people's lives.
