Influenced by David Ellis, founder of High School for Recording Arts (HSRA), and mentored by the school’s Development Director, Tony Simmons, Darryl Young is a special education teacher who uses music to capture the attention of students and inspire learning. Phil Winden, a master producer and original Studio 4 music educator, guides young artist in the studio to gain skills, such as audio engineering, mixing & mastering and more. Together, Darryl and Phil team to encourage students to use the power of music to address issues within their community. The Urban Music Project (UMP) is an agent to build self-development and self-reliance into the hearts of students.
Directed towards selected audiences, students learn to create music with an underlying goal to "Inspire, Inform and Reflect. On the surface, some of their music could be misunderstood as negative. However, like many art forms, upon a closer examination, the true purpose of the songs can be discerned.
There are many purposes for UMP songs. Some songs serve as warnings to the younger generation. While other songs are geared to give adults incite to the everyday challenges of young people. Regardless of their musical purpose and perception, all UMP expressions are from an honest hearted teenager's point of view.
Special thanks to the humble, phenomenal talent, HC the Chemist, aka Donte Suttle. He's content to stay in the background but by extension of his hip-hop sessions he has produced many of the most fascinating Urban Music songs. Thanks also to those students who submitted their songs that were not produced directly by The Urban Music Project. Thank you also to Bryan Rossi for all his support.
The Urban Music Project is open to artistically supporting organizations that are making an effort to help the community. Contact Tony Simmons at hsra.org. Our project will also accept donations to help us to continue to make community conscience music. If you want to help, go to the donation page of hsra.org in Minnesota. Then go to the donation page.
Special Dedication to Wolfie, Rick and Keith, three people no longer with us but dedicated themselves to making a difference in young people's lives.

I'm Darryl Young , often I refer to myself as The UMP. Pick up the ball!
I was going to go camping over the weekend, but this is definitely NOT camping weather. So me and some friends went to check out Dueling Pianos. Those guys are amazing - they can play just about any song that's been on the radio between 1950 and 2005.
Speaking of music, I wanted to let you know about a show we have @ Station 4 on Friday, October 16th. We are debuting a project called Sonic Transformations. It is a series of audio-visual performance pieces. The first one is called "AN OBJECT TO CRAVE". It features live music and visuals based on a short story about life, love, loss, fantasy, obsession and death.
Another group of mine, The Magnetrons, which plays an exciting and innovative Livetronica set (i.e. STS9, Disco Biscuits, The Histronic) will also be playing. The night will be full of creative, interesting, high-energy music, good drinks and good times.
