Its not often that a band from England debut on North American radio, are confirmed for Glastonbury, The Big Chill festivals, gatecrash the iTunes Top 30 with their debut single, and all before anyone in their homeland has ever heard of them. With their critically-acclaimed and bestsellingdebut album, Helium, already hailed "as close to musical perfection as it gets," Urban Myth Club are one band that don't do things the traditional way.
"I Feel It", the debut single was pre-released on iTunes with no promotion and rooted itself in the Top 30 electronic charts. "Helium" has since hit the Amazon Bestseller chart, including No.1 on Amazon's dance/chill chart. The band have also reached No.1 in the MySpace Top Artist chart.
The Club formed when electronica artist Dezz met Hollywood film composer Stephen Barton, who had recently returned to the UK having worked on blockbusters such as Gladiator. The duo created the downtempo tracks that plotted the future course of the Club. When LA called with the offer to write the music for Shrek 2 and Narnia, Stephen took a sabbatical from the Club and the idea of a collective was born.
Dezz hooked up with enigmatic producer Ian Sanderson (whose infamous Cuckooland samples have been used by hundreds of artists including Massive Attack, Lemon Jelly, the Prodigy and Beastie Boys) and Urban Myth Club's rocket left orbit.
Additional members of the collective soon followed including downtempo legend Andy Dragazis (Blue States), and vocalists Clare Szembek (The Funky Lowlives, Captain) and Rowan Godel. Other celebrity members remain confidential. The Urban Myth Club was meant to be a secret, but a leaked album sampler found its way to a Canadian DJ who, in an unprecedented move by commercial radio, playlisted all six tracks on his show. Taste makers in the UK have not been far behind, with airplay including Radio 1, Radio 2, Xfm, Classic FM & Ministry of Sound and a growing army of trend-setting fans such as Big Chill founder Pete Lawrence, Adam Freeland, Bob Harris & Music Week.
After two years in the studio, Urban Myth Club have crafted an album of beautifully eclectic tracks, fusing organic electronica with anything that tickled their fancy, and the results are destined to become a million personal soundtracks. Drawing favourable comparisons from Air to Royksopp, the collective have been hailed as "the next Zero 7" by DJ Trevor Shand of Clear FM who told listeners:
"Breathtaking stuff - poised to become the hottest downtempo act ever from the UK."
Live, Urban Myth Club are a seven-piece outfit, joined on stage by vocalists including Niamh McNally, Clare Szembek and Rowan Godel, bassist Louis Thorne, Ben Gurney-Smith (Percussion) and Shannon Harris (Keys).
Ben Mynott of Blues & Soul Magazine is one of a number of journalists already hailing Helium as a classic. He wrote:
"Urban Myth Club have produced one of the finest, most complete, most beautiful and truly gorgeous albums my ears have heard for years. When I've first came across "Helium", I was blown away, just taken aback with the quality of the song-writing and the beauty of their arrangements. It's quite frankly stunning. One of the best downtempo albums ever released. Beautiful, stunning and simply adorable. Flawless."
The Urban Myth Club have appeared mysteriously but are spreading spontaneously.
