I was recently asked, “What is it you do?” I have always been at a lost as to how to answer that question. I resist the idea that “what I do” is who I am. I would prefer to think that I do what I do because of who I am. Yet, I am not sure that the distinction is so clear-cut. Undoubtedly, I do what I do because of who I am. Nevertheless, the converse is also true, what I do adds significantly to who I am.
Of course, all of this ruminating skirts the question, of what it is I do. Just recently I had the opportunity to view the French documentary, The Gleaners & I. A friend recommended it, commenting that she saw me, that is, “what I do,” in the film. At first I didn’t get it, but then the proverbial light bulb over my head flashed on: I am a gleaner. No, I don’t glean grains and produce from the fields or the garbage bins, nor do I make it a habit of picking up trash for reuse (unless it is garden related). I do, however, glean grains of truth from the unobserved, the dross, the grotesque, and the fringes of society. Although I have not thought of it this way before, it is my work, and it is reflected in what I do as a writer and photographer, an urban psychologist and psycho-geographer.
