They fell in love as teenagers in Harlem and despite the allure of the streets Larenz has held on to her love. (Dedicated 2 Derrion Albert, 16 and Kevin Miller, 13)
By Derrick James Thornton
I don’t mean to wake you from obscurity…
But there is No Santa Clause.
No Easter Bunny.
No Tooth Fairy or Boogeyman hiding under your Bed.
But there are two more young black men DEAD.
And that’s a reality.
One 16… Another 13…
Each of them a casualty.
They were old enough to know the dangers of street life,
however still too young to be a formality.
Young Black men…
Why do we continue to look at life as if it’s disposable?
We must learn that we cannot go in and out of this life- unnoticeable.
We leave behind Black mothers and grandmothers who can do nothing more than become emotional…
They wake up clinching bibles, and crying out for Jesus.
And all the while… We make them take that extra mile….
And kill each other for no obvious reason.
But we “Gangsta” ain’t we?
Proving our gangsta by talking all gangsta and rockin’ Chucks.
It takes 3 of us to jump a brother, or shoot him in his head…
When we can fight it out… Let the anger out…
Both go home and the next morning each wake up.
Man, we gotta get tired of taking close-ups…
TV cameras and mug shots.
We gotta get dedication…
To education….
And stop pushin crack rocks.
In one week…
Both Derrion Albert and Kevin Miller were murdered in the streets.
One on a block in Chicago and the other on a street corner in Queens.
Both of them were Royalty…
Forced to exit so horribly…
And neither of them were allowed to become KINGS.
This…MUST STOP!!!!

With a combined love for fish and grits.
She and I embarked on a journey- written just like this…
She was five foot two; the baddest chick.
She liked hot sauce on everything- and didn’t limit a dish.
The city of Atlanta was this lady’s stomping grounds of choices.
Her body was perfect…
She knew how to work it…
And damn I loved her voice.
She invited me to dinner…
Fried chicken, yams, and collard greens.
She could cook her ass off…
And kept a brother on lean.
She smelled tempting; I couldn’t help but stay for the eve.
We were all up in the bedroom…
Making some leg room…
Can you imagine the scene?
She and I got so close; nothing could slip in between.
She fixed me a night cap;
sat down in my lap
And we shared a lil’ cast and crème.
Lookin’ at my watch, I figured I’d stay for the nexus.
She and I had suppa…
We became luva’s…
Only I had no idea I’d be meeting her husband at breakfast…
Damn.
