Urban Sun (http://www.urbansun.org) is an 8-piece NYC band, that combines funk, rock, and soul into an energetic, unforgettable live show. An Urban Sun concert can be quite a funky ride. They cover a lot of ground, and although they play mostly original music, they pay deep respect to their influences (The Meters, Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, P-Funk, etc). Their grooves are skin-tight, creative, deeply funky, and highly infectious. Once you hear them, you’ll know why they’re notorious for removing butts from chairs. When the industrial-strength funk kicks in, you don’t have much of a choice Your bacon will be shakin’. If you can’t make the show in person, search out some videos, either on their own site or on YouTube. They have also been recently chosen as the HIGHTIMES band of the Month! Look out for them in an upcoming issue.
Since 2002, Urban Sun has steadily grown a strong, loyal NYC fanbase. They consistently pack hundreds of heads into legendary venues like B. B. King’s, The Knitting Factory, The Mercury Lounge, Sullivan Hall, and many more. They’ve successfully spread the word beyond the five boroughs, recently adding Boston, Philly, and Portland, ME fans to the Urban Sun family. While gaining momentum, they’ve opened up for class acts such as Trombone Shorty, Johnny Sketch, Salvador Santana, and Cyril Neville.
Get yourself ready for much more from Urban Sun. They have big plans, most of which involve you shaking that ass. Following up their 2008 studio album “Practice Me” (listen and download from iTunes, CDbaby, and amazon.com), Urban Sun is working hard on a brand-new album. It will no doubt contain fresh new grooves, some of which you’ll hear if you can catch them live. You can also expect an exclusive new track written by their good friend and New Orleans music legend, Allen Toussaint. Now THAT’s high praise!
We’re excited to have EOTO back at Sullivan Hall this Thurs. 10/22 with special guests Break Science, featuring Adam Deitch and Jim McLoughlin of moe. This will be a killer show. For more info click through to www.sullivanhallnyc.com
