Independent Rapper and Cancer Patient Creates Musical Journey of his Struggle to Further Research into Cancer Treatment----
Westfield, NJ, December 13, 2006- Few situations cause the agony to patients and families like a diagnosis of cancer. Urbalist, aka Jesse Hershkowitz, is a musician who has taken his personal struggle to a new level to reach out and advance the research for cancer treatment.----
Urbalist has been writing and producing his own, as well as other performers’, music since the age of 15. Now 26, he has been working for the past ten years to make a name for himself in the music business and to create music with integrity and appeal. He has worked, performed and recorded in New York, Rhode Island, and most recently Atlanta, GA, where he relocated last year to become more involved in the Atlanta Hip-Hop scene. After starting at the beginning again in Georgia last year, he was finally becoming known in the music community and making a name for himself when he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, in August 2006. He was forced to give up his work and return to New York City, where he is being treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.----
Never one to let anything stop him before, Urbalist was determined to turn his illness and treatment into a positive experience both for himself and other cancer patients and their families. Through surgery, chemotherapy, and stints in and out of the hospital, he has written and recorded what he calls “Cancerous Flow: Lyrical Journal”. The album describes his experience from Day One through the treatment. It touches on his fear, despair, and also his determination to vanquish his disease. Urbalist intends to market the album as a fund-raising tool for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. “Hip Hop and lyricism have always been how I express myself. Many of today’s youth and younger adults relate to hip-hop and urban culture more than anything else. It’s an untapped resource for creating consciousness about the need for cancer research and fundraising. It’s also an opportunity to bring this issue into the light using a medium which is popular worldwide and influences millions of people.” ----
At the time of this writing, Urbalist is still undergoing chemotherapy, and his medical team has an extremely positive outlook for his full recovery. But the experience has changed him, and challenged him, as he wishes to challenge the rest of the human community to do it’s part in fighting this disease.---
On February 18, 2007 Urbalist finished chemotherapy and officially became a cancer survivor!-------------------------------------------------------------------------
