One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, URINETOWN THE MUSICAL is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, URINETOWN THE MUSICAL is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny.
Hey, how come those people in California get all the GOOD public amenities? I was just reading this post by Meg Tilly, the actress ("Agnes of God", "The Big Chill", etcetera) and author, and she was just rhapsodizing about one of the amenities she visited at a place called The Madonna Inn. AND she didn't even have to stand in a line or pay to get in from the sound of things. So how come we're stuck with Public Amenity Number 9??
It's kind of a mythical place, you understand. A bad place. A place you won't see until Act Two. And then...? Well, let's just say it's filled with symbolism and things like that. But Urinetown "the musical", well, here we are. Welcome.
What is Urinetown? Urinetown's a lie A means to keep the poor in check Until the day they die! I did not shirk their dirty work But things are different now We'll fight for right With all our might Until we win somehow!
