use every part of the deer is an Ottawa-based death-roots band. The deer usually play and compose as a duo comprising Matt McLennan and Susanna Wiens. Matt and Susanna met on an airplane, where they hit upon common experiences of being from Winnipeg, being doctoral students at the University of Ottawa and playing some musical instruments. This eventually led to the band’s formation in the summer of 2007. Matt is the principal songwriter, and is otherwise known for his work with Canadian college radio success stories Cone Five, The Consumer Goods, and Mr. Pine. use every part of the deer is inspired by surrealist poetry and such American musics as bluegrass, gospel, classic country, and punk. This mix of influences has yielded a debut CD, released July 25th, 2008, that may be best described as suicide-gospel.
For recording and performing purposes, use every part of the deer is sometimes rounded out by a revolving lineup of musicians that includes Sean Pauls (keyboards, rich manly backing vocals, etc.), Ryan McVeigh (bass, rich manly backing vocals, etc.), Matt Hildebrand (drums, hotness) and Gareth Williams (rich manly backing vocals).

Here's a video made by Angus Kohm for our song 'Pedestrian Road Rage', where Susanna proudly "brings a ridiculous children’s sing-along simplicity to the words and execution" (thanks to Vanessa Annand of the Martlet for that apt description... and to Angus for the video).
