Uusinta Chamber Ensemble was grounded in 1998, and the first concert performance took place in Helsinki in 1999. The Finnish word "uusinta" is a homonym, meaning both "the newest" and "a replay". Fitting to its name, the group has premiered almost 100 new works (Apr 2009) and given the much-needed second performance to countless works.
Uusinta started as a group for young performing contemporary composers, but the constantly growing interest among non-composing musicians turned Uusinta soon into a group of first class musicians, where composers have became a minority.
Uusinta has released three albums, Uusinta at the edge of time (2004) with music by eight different Finnish composers, Max Savikangas' profile double album Extraterrestrial, and Osmo Tapio Räihälä's profile album Värikallio ("Rock Painting"). Uusinta has performed in all major Finnish festivals of new music, in its own concert series, and made plenty of live radio recordings. Apart from its native Finland, Uusinta has performed in Denmark, France and Spain. The German (in Berlin) premiere will take place in 2009. Uusinta were awarded the Finnish Composers' Society's prize for its work for Finnish contemporary music in 2001.
The 2009 is Uusinta's 10th anniversary jubilee year.
