Live Promotions

Aside from being a small indie record label, vacuous pop also promotes occasional live music shows in Oxford, a bit like these ones...

We run a regular night at The Cellar on the 3rd Saturday of every month, plus other occasional shows at various venues in Oxford should the right tour come along and routing wont fit the regular night.

As such, we don't run a venue or have a load of nights to fill so the emphasis is on quality rather than quantity with line ups that hopefully complement each other, rather than just slinging a bunch of random bands on together.

We urge you to arrive early to see the support bands too and enjoy the whole night.

The shows offer a chance to see some of the best underground/leftfield bands around - both national and international - and over the past 7 years the following quality acts have played, many of which were Oxford, or even UK debuts...

Our monthly night is held every 3rd Saturday of the month (excluding May, when it's on the 30th!) at:

The Cellar, Cornmarket St, Oxford
Doors 8.30pm - 3am / £various / 18+

Brought to you by the folks behind Abort, Retry, Fail? and vacuous pop...

There are no hard and fast rules, and we're not being pigeon holed by genre - as before we're mixing up the best live bands (previously the likes of Foals, Disco Drive, Fuck Buttons, Enon, Friendly Fires to name but a few) and DJs to provide the perfect weekend antidote to a shitty working week!

Playing what we like, when we like but nothing too self indulgent (the aim is still to get your dance on after all!) - expect a classic mix of rock, electro, indie, dance, breaks, beats, whatever... if it's good we'll play it, and we might even do requests if we have them!

4 OR 5 MAGICIANS
A four or five piece alternative rock outfit from Brighton, taking most obvious influence from the golden era of American indie rock … Guided By Voices, REM, The Replacements, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Pixies, Built To Spill, and early Weezer and Everclear, but could probably write a list longer than your arm of bands who have influenced them.

The band have released two singles to date, both of which were awarded 'Single Of The Week' status by Steve Lamacq, as well as picking up a stack of glowing reviews in all areas of the press, not least the NME who featured the band as one of their tips for 2009, and have since labelled the songwriting of frontman Dan Ormsby as "simply magnificent".

www.myspace.com/4or5magicians

THE MUSCLE CLUB
Hailing from Cardiff in South Wales, this young quartet make light work of crafting genuinely melodic, uncompromising and jangly indie pop tunes. Having formed a little over 12 months ago, co front men Matthew Hitt and Michael Bateson-Hill deliver often heartfelt lyrics with a raw passion that belies their tender years and bring to mind the likes of Fugazi and At The Drive In.

Having spent the past 6 months or so touring, playing with the likes of Cursive, Johnny Foreigner, Dananananaykroyd, Black Lips and recording a live session at BBC's Maida Vale, the young Welsh outfit are set to hit the road again this autumn with Brighton indie upstarts 4 or 5 Magicians.

www.myspace.com/themuscleclub

SPRING OFFENSIVE
The band released their debut EP this summer and have been working like madmen since, selling out of copies of their record and sharing a stage with the likes of Talons and The Kabeedies along the way.

First noticed and played by BBC 6 Music's Tom Robinson, who had them in for an interview, Spring Offensive are building up speed in the local scene and beyond with their brand of melodic, danceable, anthemic alt-indie and accomplished live show.

NB - Sorry but all shows are 18+ unless indicated otherwise.

Details are subject to change due to circumstances beyond our control, generally by the management of the venue, etc, blah, blah, blah...

Demo Policy

*** PLEASE NOTE, WE ONLY RUN A LIMITED AMOUNT OF SHOWS SO GENERALLY CAN'T HELP WITH SPECULATIVE REQUESTS FROM BANDS FOR SHOWS BUT FEEL FREE TO SEND CDs FOR CONSIDERATION IF YOU WISH - WE DO HAVE ECLECTIC TASTE BUT THERE ARE LIMITS SO NO METAL/EMO/POP PUNK/GRUNGE/GENERIC INDIE/FUNK/SHIT, ESPECIALLY NO FUNK! - SEE GIG HISTORY ON LEFT FOR AN IDEA OF WHAT WE DO ***

*** APOLOGIES, BUT DUE TO THE RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF MESSAGES RECEIVED AND ONLY LIMITED TIME THERE REALLY IS NO TIME TO READ ALL OF THEM, NEVER MIND REPLY, SO THEY WILL MOST PROBABLY BE IGNORED, ESPECIALLY THOSE HASSLING FOR GIGS - SORRY, I'VE TRIED TO KEEP UP BUT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE!
YOU COULD TRY EMAILING AS THAT STANDS A BETTER CHANCE OF BEING LOOKED AT BUT AGAIN I AM REALLY SWAMPED AND STRUGGLE TO FIND THE TIME TO KEEP UP WITH THEM ALL!***

NEW HEAVY SOUNDS - A club night for those not afraid of aural assault!

A new night of heavy live sounds and DJs to match in a new venue as dark and loud as necsary.

Hello. Please do delete this comment if you so wish.

We're just making sure that everyone knows that our debut album 'Horses For Courses' is available to buy from our little record label's online shop:

    http://www.donttellclare.co.uk/shop.htm

Its been selling faster than we expected, and we currently only have around a quarter of our stock left - so we thought we'd better you all know that if you want a copy then now would be a good time to pick one up! If you buy it from the link above then you're buying it direct from us, the label aren't taking a cut - so its a bit like Fair Trade for struggling musicians.

International mail-order is available, just follow the instructions.

Thank you very much, and sorry for making a mess of your profile. If its any kind of consolation, we don't have a MySpace bot, so I'm leaving these comments the old fashioned way. Three -and-a-half thousand of them. My life is so exciting.

    Lots of love

    Hello everyone,

Thank you for the support. It means a great deal - the past few months have been amazing. Great reviews, great shows up and down the country, airplay and interviews with Kerrang! Radio & Total Rock Radio, even a show at Alexandra Palace for Freestyle Festival has been confirmed.

Alexandra Palace will bring an end to our first major UK Tour. The tour leads up to the official release of our first EP proper, 'Guerilla'. This will be available everywhere on November 2nd.

If you're not too familiar with us yet, there are some reviews below and you can pick up some free downloads from our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/NIXA/8798900727).

Here are the dates (more to be confirmed).

    See you out there x

"NIXA possess a quality that sets them apart from other front runners on the alt/rock scene with perfect dynamics and incredible song craft. They bounce between gentle and aggressive in a single beat, tied with soaring harmonies and mesmerising stage presence. This band will find themselves being listened to by a wide audience, no doubts in both the alternative and commercial rock scenes"
    TOTAL ROCK

"...done very, very well. Deep, powerful voice, BIG music and just the feeling that something very professional is happening -I don't mean in a clinical way, just in that way that, when you find out they're unsigned, it's a bit of a shock!"
    XFM

"The absolute epiphany of my weekend was London based Nixa. Everytime I see this band, I fall in love a little bit more. Their performance was stunning and it was definitely the climax of the night as things petered off afterwards. Their Biffy Clyro-esque style, gorgeous vocal harm
