The first woman in space Valentina Tereshkova marks her jubilee and in her 70 years she dreams of flying to Mars.
She said she has only one hobby – “this is a unique and mysterious red planet, which we with Sergei Korolev (Soviet space program leader – Itar-Tass) dreamt of several decades ago.”
“I am ready to fly there and never return back,” Tereshkova told a news conference on the eve of her birthday.
The world got to know about the code-named Seagull, when her spaceship Vostok VI was launched at 1230 Moscow time on June 16, 1963.
A former textile worker in her 26 years has become the fifth Russian cosmonaut to go in the Earth’s orbit.
An amateur parachutist, who made 163 jumps, did her utmost to be enlisted in the first women team of cosmonauts.
“A five-member female group has more difficult load tests than a male group did,” Tereshkova recollected. But all had “only one mad idea – to undergo this training faultlessly at any cost and fly to space.”
After her first and the only travel to space she devoted all her life to public work.
Tereshkova was honoured with the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union and many other titles. She was elected an honorary citizen of the city of her birthplace – Yaroslavl. A lunar crater is also named after her.
“I am glad that difficult happiness fell to my lot – to be among those, who laid the road to stars,” Tereshkova said.
S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia staff and management congratulate you on the junth anniversary of the space flight of the first woman in space.
The three-day mission, which you carried out on-board Vostok-6 June 16 through 19, 1963, when you, flying in low-Earth orbit simultaneously with V.F.Bykovsky who was piloting Vostok-5, made 48 orbits around Earth, was one of the first important steps made by the Earthlings on the road towards the actual exploration of space. Steps that were brave and necessary for the terrestrial civilization.
Owing to these first steps, the Mankind was able to start the wide-ranging exploration of the near-Earth space using manned spacecraft and space stations. Without all this, it would have been unthinkable today to embark on the most ambitious project of the 21st century, the International Space Station (ISS) project, which is being carried out through joint efforts of many countries in the interests of further advancing our civilization towards gaining the knowledge of the mysteries of the Universe, obtaining new data in various fields of science and technology, developing and using advanced technologies.
Your knowledge and courage, confidence of all those who prepared and carried out the Vostok-6 mission in its successful completion became the guarantees of the new achievement of the domestic space science.
Dear Valentina Vladimirovna, the example set by your mission became an enticement for the women to join the space program: today they travel along the road of space exploration side-by-side with men towards understanding the mysteries of the Universe.
