  • Bio

Valerie MIZE: Earthy yet educated; simple yet soulful; funky and fun; Mize's music is immediately appealing to the eclectic in everyone. With influences ranging from Hometown to Motown, Oklahoma born, NYC based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Valerie Mize rubs some rootsy Red Dirt on her classical upbringing. Though Mize was born in tiny-town Mid-America, she began traveling internationally at an early age, and had moved 13 times by the time she graduated high school. It was during a semester in the Netherlands that Mize purchased a guitar and taught herself to play in the finger style that is now her signature sound. Upon returning to the States, after a short stint writing and busking in Madison, Wisconsin, Mize moved back to her native Oklahoma, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music, with an emphasis in jazz vocal performance. She studied under Vernon Howard, former teacher of pianist and vocalist Norah Jones, and saxophonist Tim Ries (Rolling Stones). After Graduation, Mize moved to New York City to build a band and further her musical endeavors. Backed by the rock solid rhythm section of drummer Tomo Kanno and bassist Antar Goodwin (Patty Smyth, Lauryn Hill), Mize recently teamed up with cellist Ward Williams (Vienna Teng, Brandi Carlile), multi-instrumentalist Greg Mayo (The Greg Mayo Band), and producer/engineer Robert L. Smith (U2, Imogen Heap, Lady Gaga) at Defy Recordings to record her debut EP "Auspices" to be released April 19, 2011. More information can be found at www.ValerieMIZE.com and info@ValerieMIZE.com.
