I was born in Youngstown, Ohio - the State where many funk bands and great artists are from. I guess it is in the blood my love for this music. At the age of 5, my family moved to St. Louis, MO where I am now residing. I have nothing but love for St. Louis, MO. STL does have it from A-Z. There is a lot of talent here. It's like a diamond mine.
I started singing at age of 5 with records my father had around the house. After our family moved to STL I sang with the youth choir at church and graduated to the adult choirs. I started piano lessons at age eight but got away from playing until I started playing with the Straight Up Band who needed the keyboard sound and knew I could play piano. My first keyboard was the B3 organ, next the JX3, Arp & Roland synthesizers to name a few. I also learned to play a full drumset and percussion instruments as the cow bell, tamborine, etc..
Over the years I performed with bands as a lead vocalist and keyboardist. My first band was called the Swinging Limitations which consisted largely of high school band members started by the Wilson brothers. There were at times as many as ten members with a nice horn section. The band started out as a jazz band playing basically instrumentals. Two original instrumental recordings were done by the band. When the band started playing top 40 hits for clubs and dances the vocalists were added.
The band later changed their name to Right On Band. Within the Right On Band existed the female group "The Lightbulbs" which I was a part of also. Many of the female group top 40 songs were performed by us. With a change of several members, The Right On Band evolved into the Straight Up Band. We continued to played top 40 music for local night clubs and dances in STL and surrounding small towns. We played every weekend for years.
Along with the gigs, the band did several original recordings at Oliver Sain's Studio and JCE Records. Songs "Sexy Guy" & "Fallin In Love" were recorded at Technisonic Studios in STL through JCE Records. These two songs were contracted to Move Records in the United Kingdom. As luck have it, Move Records dissolved. I also played with my cousin, Rick Spalding's funk band and Carol & Bill King's Sex Machine Girl Group.

Previous years, I gave several talent showcases for local talent to have an opportunity to perform on stage. I really loved doing this and has become my passion to continue giving showcases. I'm also now working on a non-profit organization called The Gateway Talent Foundation which will support local artists in providing opportunities to perform.
All during the years of performing, I also held jobs to maintain my standard of living. You actually would have to leave STL to survive or make it big and with a family, it's not always an option. I truly feel that success comes in doing what you love to do along with doing what you need to do. Plus it's fun and it will make you happy and feel fullfilled. Working a job may or may not last and you are at the mercy of that job.... working for yourself or having your own....you are in control and it will last as long as you want it to.
