Soul, Blues, Rock, Country, 60's Mod music.
I like singer/songwriters who play guitar, people with great voices.
Movies
I like many films, but I hate scary movies! Foreign films like Cinema Paradiso, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. One of my childhood favourites was Hayley Mills. Have the DVD of her in PollyAnna and Parent Trap which I still watch over and over. Saw the Big Lebowski recently which I'd seen before but it reminded just how brilliant the film is. And it's got Mickey Newbury's song Just Dropped In (to see what my condition was in.
Television
Larry Sanders, Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld Shows. Yes you've got it, I like comedy.
Also like cop shows like The Shield. Just watching the Wire which people are raving. In the 70's I was a big fan of The Professionals. Also like old tv drama classics like Upstairs, Downstairs and Family at War.
Books
Auto-biographies of famous people. Here are just a few: Actor Michael Caine, Comedian Norman Wisdom, singers Dusty Springfield and Lulu, Sharon Osbourne's Extreme and the late Don Arden's Mr Big. I also enjoy the writings and wit of Oscar Wilde, in particular his book Picture of Dorian Gray.
Val isn't around now until January 6th. Please don't send me Friend requests or messages until after this date. Happy Christmas everyone. Posted at 11:31 AM Dec 9 view more
I am married with two grown up children and 3 young grandsons. In the 1960's I worked for Don Arden (Sharon Osbourne's Dad) and the Mod band the Small Faces, Amen Corner and The Move, plus some other non-famous bands such as The Lonely Ones (what happened to them?)
When I left work to have a family I got involved in community work as a volunteer, writing for the community newspaper and presenting radio shows for Britain's first community radio station "Radio Thamesmead" where I lived in South London. I went back to college when my children were a bit older and studied for a degree, graduating in 1987. I then went onto study journalism and was a campaigning journalist for 17 years. I received an MBE in 1997 for that work. Oh, and my husband is the wonderful photographer Phil Weedon. In 2007 I led a campaign to get a commemorative plaque put up in Carnaby Street in honour of Impresario Don Arden and The Small Faces. The Plaque was unveiled in September 2007 by drummer Kenney Jones.
People have asked me what sort of things I campaign about as a journalist and the simple answer is "only things that lead to something good". I am a rebel at heart and hate injustice. I am presently doing some music promotion, helping a few bands get gigs and have just organised the Modrophonic May Day which takes place on May 1st & 2nd 2010 and the Cavern Club Liverpool. I love organising events and this one is very special. We've had interest from Mods all over the world and it's going to be a huge party! Make sure you reserve your tickets in advance as this will probably sell out quickly. Come along and check out 50 years of Mod music from great bands and DJs. The year 2010 is the anniversary of the Swinging Sixties so make sure you're part of the celebration in Liverpool on MayDay weekend. The 1960's was the best. I'm a shopaholic and still prefer 60's Mod stuff. Val has recently started writing for the top entertainment online magazine ZANI. Check out her features on www.zani.co.uk
