Vanessa Freebairn-Smith is an L.A. based cellist and founding member of the Sonus Quartet who does both studio work and live concerts in a wide spectrum of venues with a varied list of artists across musical genres. She trained at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, and received a BA in Cello Performance from UCLA in 2003. Along with the other members in Sonus she spent much of 2006 and 2007 on tour playing with Gnarls Barkley. She also soloed with Josh Groban on his "Awake" tour in 2007, and was featured on the track "Un Giorno Per Noi" on his album by the same name. She has had close musical collaborations with such artists as Trent Reznor, Sarah McLachlan, Jeff Beck, and Diana Ross, and has played on numerous scores for film and T.V., appeared in several music videos, one feature film, and many award shows and late-night/day-time talk shows. She has also been a multi-instrumentalist with both Justin Clayton and Gemma Hayes and has been principal cellist in Dakah Hip-Hop Orchestra since 2000. Most recently she has begun arranging as well, writing mostly for projects Sonus is invloved in. Her arrangements can be heard on albums by Van Hunt, Justin Clayton, Martina Topley-Bird, and John Frusciante.
