Vanquish was formed in August of 2001 with a lineup of Ryan Wagner on guitar, Mark DiVito on guitar/vocals, Brian Berry on bass, and Anthony Maiden on drums. The band set out with a passion for heavy metal music, with influences ranging from contemporaries such as Metallica and Dream Theater to classic Pink Floyd. In 2002, Vanquish parted ways with Ryan Wagner, under mutual musical differences, as well as welcoming current singer/keyboardist, Greer Cawthon, joining the lineup to allow Mark more experimental freedom
with the guitar. In July 2002, Vanquish began playing shows locally and regionally and quickly began developing and entertaining a loyal fan base.
With the demand for their music growing, Vanquish started recording their first album, Nine Deadly Sins, at Cue Recording studios in Falls Church, VA in early 2003. With the technicality and complexity of Vanquish's music ever-increasing, Steve King joined Vanquish as a second guitarist in early 2004. Vanquish
then began to tour up and down the east coast, playing shows as far as Washington D.C. and New York City. In mid-October of 2004 Vanquish parted ways with Steve King and bassist Brian Berry under mutual musical differences.
Vanquish continued writing and rehearsing without a bassist for the next few months. They began auditioning bassists in the area during this time, with the hopes that a suitable bassist could be found, while writing another album's worth of material. Their new material is heavier, more melodic, and more progressive than anything Vanquish has written to date and is currently awaiting recording. In late April of 2005 (officially in mid-June), bassist Nick Johnson joined the lineup and Vanquish began playing venues with him in August of 2005.
Vanquish has been playing venues throughout the peninsula and central Virginia over the past year and a half, while developing a rapidly growing fan base. Their first album, 'Nine Deadly Sins', was completed in September 2006 and is now available through the band, at shows, and at a growing number of local CD shops in Virginia.
A milestone for Vanquish came January 2007, when they were asked to open for the preeminent Tool tribute band, Truage, at the local major venue, The Norva. Vanquish was very well recieved and has been thrusted into
the forefront of the local metal scene as a result of their performance.
In 2008 Vanquish began recording their second album 'Beyond Desolation' in Separated Music Studios in Richmond, VA. The material is heavier and more technical than the first album. Unfortunately, in early 2009 Vanquish parted ways with bassist Nick Johnson under mutual musical differences. Vanquish is currently playing shows with the assistance of Brian Berry to support the release of 'Beyond Desolation'. These shows will also feature new material. The album will available Oct 24, 2009 through the band and local music stores. Be sure to check it out.
