  • Bio

Vardegrav is a Black Metal band from Son, Norway. The band was formed in the dark winter of 2008 by Morken and a person who shall not be named. The first intention with the project was to express feelings and explore different aspects of Black Metal, but as time went by, it evolved into a more philosophical form of art in which the band wanted to melt together music, lyrics, feeling and thoughts into a manifestation of a dark universe. The project was pretty much idle until Phobos and Proeliator joined a few months later. These two were already friends of Morken before he had any relations with the drummer. The current lineup was now Morken on guitars, Phobos on vocals, Proeliator on bass and he whom shall not be named on drums. With a full lineup the band was baptized "Vardegrav". When it comes to the name "Vardegrav" itself, it consists of two Norwegian words: "varde" and "grav". Meaning "beacon" and "grave" respectively, the name symbolises both the heights and the depths of the world: the vast might of nature or the triumphant philosophical, elevated being; as well an assault on the lowest levels of rotting human thoughts and creations. The logo is build up exclusively of twigs and branches from the forest of their home town Son, which symbolises the bands connection with the purity of nature. Not long after this, the drummer began to misbehave in a way the other members resented, so it felt natural for both parties that he quit the band. This was the very day the band had their first rehearsal with all the members. It was not created any music worth mentioning before the drummer had left the band. After this unfortunate incident, the three remaining members continued to make music, write lyrics and give thoughts to the concept of their demo album. The band had worked on the project for about six months when the drummer Nazgûl joined the group in November 2009. The time after that they continued the job of creating songs, practicing and recording the material. In the autumn of 2010 Vardegrav went to a studio in Oslo to record the drums for the album. The band used approximately 20 hours on this, spread over two days. The next couple of months were used to mix, produce and master the album. The process took three whole years from the beginning to the end . All the song titles, lyrics and the album title is in Norwegian. Vardegrav came up with the title "Begravd i en varde" for the album. This means "buried in a stone pile". The title also had a symbolic meaning to the band. The album was mixed and produced by Leif-Johan Strode Godø and Vardegrav, but the mastering was done by Leif-Johan alone. All the cover art and all the images were made by the band itself. The album was self released on December 27th 2010 and was limited to 300 copies. In February 2011 the band decided to part with drummer Nazgûl with no bad blood. In April 2011 Vardegrav signed with the Norwegian underground label Sotron Records, which is now the current label of the band. This was for a formal release of the album Begravd i en varde. The band is currently working on the making of an upcoming EP which hopefully will be released some time during 2011. We also recommend reading the ideology to each song in the blog. These last words will improve the experience. Feel free to leave comments if you have anything to say about us or our music.
