With their varied musical backgrounds, varnish disregard genre and simply make the music that feels right. They tend to resist being put into a specific genre, preferring just to call themselves a rock band. However, you might notice their love of British rock, old melodic punk, and 80s college radio.
The lyrics and vocals are conceived of by Amber, who has enough lyrics ready for the next three or four albums. Those lyrics are then wrapped up in dense layers of guitar and bass from Jason and Johnny. Their different playing styles and approaches add to the textured and varied sound that varnish are known for.
On current recordings, you'll hear Ben’s drumming, which was a clear and natural fit from his first session with varnish. Goodbye, drum machines! However, Ben has moved and the throne is now being filled by the fab aNdi pUzL. You're going to like her as much as we do!
No one stops to ask whether what they are playing is anything but suited for the song they are building. They focus on the final sound of the song, rather than on the rules others have set for composition or even whether or not what they are playing is actually a chord. varnish see influences as inspirations, not limitations.
