We are dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals and the creation of a more responsible and humane community. We provide for and protect abandoned, abused and unwanted animals and promote animal welfare through programs and services that mutually benefit people and animals.

Have you ever had a great idea for a fundraiser and didn’t know how to act on it? We are looking for volunteers to assist us with great ideas of how we can invigorate our events. We would love to have some people that would like to work on ideas for The Walk for the Animals in October to get more people involved. Who I'd like to meet: Shelter V.I.P's!!!
Hey there! i'm "jumping" jax, a super-sweet, super-hyper, super-special dog! i have a lot of energy and love to give to my new family. I am easily aroused and tend to get mouthy so any children in my new home should be at least 14 yrs old. My new family is also required to take me through an obedience class upon adoption to help me learn my manners. I like to be the center of attention so i should be the only pet in my new home. I will sometimes tolerate the company of other dogs but i have a "my-things-are-my-things!" attitude and this could potentially cause problems if i were placed in a home with another canine. My new family should be aware that i can jump a four foot fence. I love to play with toys and i really hope my new family will take me out to play fetch often! i also really love to give kisses, so take me out and i will prove to you just how super i really am! this is one of 25 dogs transferred from very poor conditions at a north carolina rescue. All of these dogs have special behavioral needs due to living for quite some time in poor conditions. The adopters must have previous dog experience and be willing to work with these issues. We are requiring that all of these dogs and their adopters attend behavior classes that we will offer in the shelter with our trainer. If you are interested in learning more about these guys please ask our staff for more information.
Dundee, Boomer, and Lonzo have been adopted!!!!!!!!Just when we thought we couldn't do it.......WE DID IT!!!!!!!Let's hope that they adjust well to their new homes and live long happy lives with their new families:-)
Hey thanks to everybody who came out and helped set up for the summer solsitce the other day. I wish I could have stayed and hung out for while but I was exhausted by the time things got started. I hope everyone had a good time and I look forward to working with you all again. Josh
A MESSAGE TO VA RESIDENTS FROM THE HUMANE SOCIETY. HELP STAND UP AGAINST THE CRUEL PRACTICE OF HOUND HUNTING IN VIRGINIA
STOP HOUNDHUNTING VA Virginia: Restrict Hound Hunting The cruel practice of hunting wildlife using packs of hound dogs is under scrutiny in Virginia. Hound hunters chase bears, deer, raccoons, and other wildlife to exhaustion or corner them in a tree and shoot them down in the name of sport. The practice provokes the ire of landowners, outdoor enthusiasts, animal welfare advocates and hunters alike.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is considering stricter regulations and your voice is urgently needed.
What You Can Do: Take a moment to send a message to the members of the Hunting With Hounds Stakeholder Advisory Committee, letting them know that using large packs of dogs, sometimes fitted with high-tech radio collars, to chase, harass, and kill wildlife no longer has a place in Virginia and should be restricted.
Public officials receive a lot of email, so it is important to personalize the subject line and the text below so that your message will stand out and have a greater impact.

Does the VBSPCA have bumper stickers that I can purchase that say I love my VBSPCA Cat? I've seen them on some people's cars before and I'd like to know if you sell them at the VBSPCA. Also I was looking at the website and I'd like to become a member by donating. Do you have a monthly donation I can do or is it a one time joining fee?

Dear God please send me someone who will care! I'm so tired of running, I'm sick with despair. My body is aching. It's racked with pain. And dear God I pray as I run in the rain, That someone will love me and give me a home. A warm cozy bed and a big juicy bone. My last owner tied me all day in the yard Sometimes with no water and God that was hard! So I chewed me leash God and I ran away. To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.
