Most musical attention devoted to the band Off The International Radar, with Henry Sansom and Don Kennedy, in which I play keyboards, drum machines and samplers. I started v.impel with my sister in high school. We took the name from the dictionary definition of the word 'impel' (to drive or cause to move onward). We wrestled with beginner guitar skills, a cheap tape recorder and a small bass amp that we would overload hopelessly, imitating The Jesus and Mary Chain and Sonic Youth while on a steady diet of rap music. After high school we lived in different cities, but she encouraged me to keep the moniker and keep recording. I got into jungle, and noisy bands like Third Eye Foundation and Flying Saucer Attack. I bought a computer and started teaching myself. Friends I've had the honour of collaborating with include Mike Hards, Stanton Warren (Venture Lift), Aidan Baker (Arc, Nadja), Tobin Long, Alan Webb (Wabi), and Ndidi Onukwulu. The goal is to try and re-create the sublime experiences of life, both beautiful and terrifying at the same time, like swimming with sharks... |
