Veli Kujala is versatile accordionist and composer whose musical interests range from most complex contemporary classical music to complete free improvisation. The stuff between those extremes include for example jazz, latin, tango and transcriptions from romantical and baroque repertoire for accordion. His own compositions include mostly works for pipe organ.
He plays regularly in bands like Pipoka, Gourmet and K-18 and has premiered accordion concertos by Markus Fagerudd and the legendary Finnish bass player and composer Pekka Pohjola. He has studied in the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki, where he is currently teaching and attaining his Doctor of Music degree focusing on Finnish contemporary accordion music. The collaboration between Veli Kujala and composer Sampo Haapamäki has lead to invention of new instrument, a quarter tone accordion. Haapamäki's concerto entitled "Velinikka" for this instrument was premiered in September 2008 in Amsterdam with Insomnio ensemble.
