Review of Squidvicar at Velvet Sheep night #2

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT VELVET SHEEP

It's a new club night for loud and fun, garage, punk and surf rock for people who like art, beer and smiling.

It started life as a fanzine in 1991-1997

My dad photocopied it at work then i gave it to mates for free, until issue 3 when i gave it to them and then asked for 50p

It was first called "We Thought You Were S***" but i realised it didn't sound too good when i was phoning labels asking to interview their bands.

The fanzine has featured Pavement, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Palace, Rocket From The Crypt, Swans, Girls vs Boys...

Was featured on the late John Peel's Radio One show. He read a bit about when a mate's bowel movement was inspired by the loudness of a Caspar Brotzmann gig.

Velvet Sheep was also shown alongside "Dazed and Confused" magazine at the Victoria & Albert museum as part of their "Street Style" exhibition in 1993.

Gave the fanzine to MTV's Toby Amies and ended up working as an intern on his "Alternative Nation".

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT NICK HUTCHINGS FROM VELVET SHEEP

Produced live performances for MTV Alt Nation with Cornershop, Man or Astro Man?, David Devant & His Spirit Wife, Radar Brothers, Calvin Johnson and Tindersticks

Launched MTV2 in the UK as producer then later channel manager

Co-created NME award winning GONZO for MTV2 with Zane Lowe

Known as "Funky Boss" on GONZO

Received a credit on the Cornershop album "When I Was Born For The Seventh Time" but they mis-spelt surname as Hutchinson! (it was me honest)

Was music editor on London Student and managed to feature the wilfully obscure minimal bleep band Pan Sonic in first feature

Been in a hotel room with Beyonce. Not on my own though.

Interviewed David Bowie. Beforehand it was as nerve-wracking as my driving test, which i failed several times.

Worked with, met or interviewed: Jamie Oliver, Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast), Philippe Starck, Howard Marks, Eminem, Aaliyah (RIP), Leslie Phillips, Carmen Electra, Jarvis Cocker, Slipknot, Luis Figo, Garth Jennings (Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy), Johnny Knoxville

Worked on many occasions with Jackass cast and crew, including in Costa Rica on "Wildboyz" where i was punched in eye as a forfeit by Jeff Tremaine, and had to avoid poisonous fer de lance snakes

Was held down by Party Boy at the London premiere for Jackass and had Dave England's one remaining testicle placed on my head

Series produced MTV Blaggers later sold to Channel Five

Been credited with thanks on the Dirty Sanchez movie

Produced music specials on Channel 4 with Ween, Mercury Rev & The D4

Talked at the ICA as part of their "Anatomy of a Music Video" night.

Made 4 films about music videos that have been on at the NFT

My wife Julie is cousin to a member of the Kooks, and official photographer for Velvet Sheep

The several times London & South East aircraft recognition champion for the Air Training Corps in the early 90s...hehem.

Who I'd like to meet:
Meg White, Kate Nash and then...music officianados, edutainers, punk rockers, hip hoppers, writers not fighters, people who make love not war, wannabes with talent, new wave, now wave, no wave, swimmers in the streams of consciousness, people who talk about themselves in the third person or say pretentious moi? and those who love Gonzo the green furry muppet, or Gonzo the Hunter S Thompson writing style, not any other forms of Gonzo. Oh and citizens of the World.

Thank you so much for "bandfriending" us, Velvet Sheep! We truly appreciate it.

We hope that you find something of ours that will wriggle into your ears, burrow down next to your heart (in a good way), and compel you to ROB US BLIND (again, in a good way: "Free downloads, ahoy!”…that is, if Myspace  ever gets around to reactivating that feature).

If you like us, please, tell a friend.
If you hate us, hell, tell an enemy!

Be well,
GUSSY
