In the wake of the greatly reviewed sample, You dont even know me (ep, 2004), the debut album The Opening is in itself an opening to a break-through for the Danish band Venice. It is a tight, streamlined and tough hit-record based upon the stamp of beats, swept in the melodic, yet cutting guitars of British and Scandinavian rock tradition. Put shortly, Venice breaks with the prevalent and common mainstream pop-rock, because their music is just as hard, mechanical and edged as it is soft, alluring and hovering.
The Danish national newspaper Berlingske Tidende wrote this about the ep: In the editorials we normally only review whole albums. But quality must necessarily take precedence over dogmatics (...) The boys from Copenhagen have, on this six-track ep, a hold on something very brave and very right, that also the revolutionary Saybia would be able to learn from. Do remember where you read this for the first time.
Venice have made an even more pretentious, tasteful and convincing lay up on the scene of rock, that breaks with the smashing 1-2-3-4 rock and casts its shadows into the land of pensiveness. The lyrical universe of Venice often takes its point of departure in wry, distorted characters, and it deals with elements that are transferable to the late-modern individual and society, where blank and spotless appearance exuding openness and reserves of energy, cracks in its surface and attitude.
Venice levels the greatest pop- and rock stars of Scandinavia, and they have come so far through hard work and intelligent exploitation of each members individual talent. Theyve got the songs, the talent and the discipline an explosive cocktail, thats only granted the few!
(Kasper No Behrens, producer)
Venice were in 2003 known to the public as the Original Soundtrack of the Danish motion picture Anja efter Viktor. Since then they have visited not few of the biggest stages in Denmark, which producer Kasper No Behrens has noticed during the recording sessions of The Opening:
Venice differ from other artists in being an unusually coherent band, playing extremely well together. Theyve got that basic swing, that one can only get through having shared almost everything day by day, year by year. And then theyve actually got something on their mind, that isnt empty phrases and shallow pop doo-wa-diddys.
Hey boys! Hilsen Morten.
