In 1969, along with his brother Maurice, Verdine formed Earth Wind & Fire – one of the most successful pop and R&B bands of all time. EW&F defined the era of sound that embodied passion, joy and the warm feeling of love, for people of all ages, races and religions. On stage, Verdine’s constant motion, enthusiasm and energy have deemed him the “ultimate fire” of the band.
Verdine’s creative insight has been instrumental in producing many of EW&F’s unforgettable performances. Their stage productions are replete with spectacular costumes, laser lights, pyrotechnics and fascinating illusions, bringing international attention to their magnetic style while raising the live concert bar to new levels.
EW&F has sold over 70 million albums worldwide, receiving countless awards, (and double-platinum, platinum and gold albums) including 8 Grammys, 4 American Music Awards, ASCAP, NAACP, and BET Lifetime Achievement Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. With a catalog of mega-hits spanning over 3 decades, EW&F remains to this day one of the world’s top touring attractions.
Verdine continues to establish copious achievements. On December 11, 2007, EWF performed before an audience of world leaders and Nobel Laureates in Oslo, Norway for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony. In classic fashion, EWF’s prolific compositions coupled with Verdine’s vitality had distinguished onlookers standing and dancing in the aisles.
May proved to be a truly triumphant month for Verdine as he signed an “Exclusive Worldwide Publishing Deal with the Royalty Network”. The success of Mary J. Blige’s “Talk to Me” (contains sample of “Key to My Heart”, originally performed by R&B group The Emotions and co-written by Verdine White) demonstrates the timelessness of Verdine’s material and the depth of his catalogue.
As if the preceding accomplishments were not enough, also in May of 2008, Verdine along with other founding members of EWF were distinguished with honorary doctorates in music from Columbia University. Perhaps for Verdine it was a manner of fulfilling his father’s wishes to follow in his footsteps. When asked about his newly bestowed degree Verdine answered, “Just call me Doc!”
Off stage, The Verdine White Foundation’s Wright Life Center for the Performing Arts is a music and arts related center in Los Angeles, CA, for at-risk and underprivileged youth. Its mission is to expose, enrich and foster an appreciation and awareness of fine arts, with an emphasis on music.
Married for over 30 years, Verdine is a family man who believes that artists should remember to give back to the community. His gifts as a visionary, entertainer, producer, musician and fashion trend-setter have touched millions around the world.
