Vermont hail from – and are currently based in – both London and Dresden. Formed in London by singer Sabine Zeissig and co-vocalist and guitarist Colin Murphy, the group has released a small run of two LPs (2003’s Ins Kino and 2004’s Ten Random).
Murphy and Zeissig have now relocated to her native Dresden, adding a trio of like-minded locals to the Vermont family – while keyboard player Adey still lives in London.
Vermont have forged a reputation for live performances that are wired, bordering on the chaotic, without losing the melodic heart of the band or over-shadowing the sweet, evocative quality of Sabine’s vocal and lyrical style. This reputation was enhanced during a 15-date UK and German tour with New York garage-y anti-folk duo, Schwervon!.
The Vermont sound is inspired by the off-kilter pop of early Talking Heads, the Sugarcubes or the Breeders, as well as the guitar noise of Sonic Youth and the Wedding Present.
Thanks very much for adding me =). I can only agree: it's really a shame that you couldn't continue to make beatiful music like you did, but well... I really would have loved to see the video for take advantage! as you described it with the washing powder, etc ;)
Lethal Bizzle, Drew McConnell (Babyshambles), Hardkaur, Sam Duckworth (Get Cape Wear Cape Fly) and Jerry Dammers (ex The Specials) will join other artists and anti-racists from around the country at the Unite Against Fascism / Love Music Hate Racism conference in London this Saturday.
See you there?
