Influences
Musical reference points? Think of merging the minimalist tradition in rock (The Velvet Underground on through Bedhead, Low and Ida) with folk-pop (Simon and Garfunkel to Suzanne Vega), and you're 75 percent of the way there. Add a whiff of neo-psychedelia (Rain Parade, Mazzy Star) and slight hints of dark Americana, and you've got it.
Call it "indie," chamber pop" or "slowcore" if you must, but what separates The Verna Cannon from the pack is simple: the songs. Verna Cannon songs move with compelling emotional logic, taking the listener to a place they'll want to return to over and over.
Sounds Like
"The Verna Cannon are an intoxicating massage, a gentle satin shower of elegy and whispers. Carefully chosen pensive notes commingle with the soothing voice of Molly Ledford, who provides vocals and guitar for the quartet. Reminiscent of bands such as Helium, Tsunami, Low, and perhaps a touch of The Sundays, their songs are a slightly pop-flavored downtempo treat. Resplendent guitar phrasing floats lightly over sparse bass and drums, yielding a fantastic tapestry of sensitive sound. The Verna Cannon speaks ever so profoundly from a quiet corner of the room."
Formed in 1996. (Dan played with Danielle Howle in
Lay Quiet Awhile prior to that; Molly, Jay and Jonathan were in various Columbia, S.C.-based bands.) Self-released a debut CD in 1998. Released "Movie Star Faces" on Cargo Records in 2000. Got real jobs and had kids from 1998 to 2006. Jonathan played with Iron & Wine for a couple of years, too.
Molly and Jay also play in the children's music band
Lunch Money.
Dan writes narcoleptic chamber music, too. Check it out here.
