Many of us have had childhood dreams of becoming doctors, firemen, lawyers, or teachers and the same was true for Toho Saunders. Born in Oakland, CA, his mom was a school teacher who had a passion for music and his dad, a musician who played with Motown’s greats, so it was inevitable that he would develop an undeniable penchant for music.
Migrating to Los Angeles as a result of his dad’s career with Motown, Toho started playing the drums at the early age of three. He spent his early childhood years absorbing the sounds of R & B, Jazz, Rock, Soul, Funk, Disco, & Pop that played on the radio. Toho eventually taught himself how to read music and play clarinet, which segued into another newfound passion and knack for the bass which allowed him to hold the rhythm like playing the drums did.
Toho was introduced to different styles of music which sparked his new found love for Reggae music. While he continued to develop his skills, the music revealed its fundamental bass lines, as he described as a breath of fresh air. But it was one summer vacation with the family to Jamaica that would be the catalyst for his journey as a Reggae music artist. The way the people loved & reacted to the music moved him in ways unimaginable. Toho was awestruck by, bass player, Derrick Barnett, and said, "I was impressed by his stage presence, comfort zone and the way he danced, moved, and held his bass as he played. It was that moment when I knew what I must do."
After returning to the Bay Area, Toho attended some college courses and played with local bands such as Pangea, Ras Kiddis, Della Grant, Twinkle Bros., and the Born Jamericans to name a few. He was on the fast track and gained recognition, credibility, and a reputation to where national artists, who were becoming internationally known, wanted to utilize him as a back up artist.
After working with a lot of great artists, Toho acquired and drew his inspiration from his parents, who were very supportive, and from greats like Marcus Miller, Family Man, and Sly & Robbie. He knew he had music within himself to express. Influenced by Bob Marley, Don Carlos, Jr. Reid, Curtis Mayfield, and many others Toho wanted to get his beats heard and play his arrangements with live musicians. His knowledge grew and evolved as he began studying production work, working with other artists, and how to make and arrange his thoughts in music.
Toho established his own label called Vibe Arc (Vibrational Architecture), which released his first album, “Schematics”, Volume 1 in 2007, an album amalgamated with Drum & Bass, Reggae, Hip Hop, R & B, Funk, Soul, Jazz, and Ghetto Tech styles. His achievements include writing and production credits on a joint project “Lucky Cat”, various hip hop collaborations with Ghostface Killah, Wu-Tang, Rappin’ 4-Tay, Spice One, and E40’s producers. As a solo artist, he’s played standout performances at such venues as Berkeley Day, a festival that features Caribbean Restaurants, as well as Shattuck Down Low and Sonoma State University. Toho is currently preparing to release new music that will have his core fans remembering why they love his vibe so much, and give future fans something new to groove to. Currently working with Vital, of Bizmark Records (Snoop Dogg, Too Short), Toho has aspirations of working with others like Sizzla, Mary J. Blige, Sade, Alicia Keys, Keyshia Cole, Square Pusher, Wil.I.Am, and any of the leading Drum and Bass, Dubstep, and Jungle Dj’s.
With Toho’s upbringing, strong work ethic, and dedication, he feels that he’s kept the industry alive by playing bass whereas in this present day in age, the younger generation uses computer applications to achieve their sound. He explains, “Music isn’t being made by hand, playing bass is a lost art form and I’m an unorthodox bass player, especially where Reggae is concerned. I like to express myself and move the way I move. My style varies depending on the mood; sometimes I’ll wear my bass high and sometimes I’ll wear it low.” Toho wants to focus on product placement on video games, software, ring tones, and films. He would also like to sign additional talent to his label and expand Vibe Arc with a prospective clothing and fragrance line but for now the music is what moves him.
