Influences
main: boston, rush, cake, weezer(early), radiohead, everclear(early), smashing pumpkins, u2, bjork, aphex twin, velvet underground ...and recently Sufjan; and of course the zombies along with a little Kanye... and of course (how could i forget) pj harvey -"is this desire" and "stories from the city, stories from the sea"... Bob Marley! Cake (we learned nearly all of fashion nugget)
Sounds Like
Weezer before they turned Green (not that they were ever really "indie," but. . .), along with Nirvana, the Pixies, and traces of Sebadoh, Sonic Youth and even some U2 from the 80s. --Dean Freelon, Stylus Magazine
---Musically they range from rocking out American-indie style a la Weezer meets Pavement, to a neo-Gothic navel-gazing simplicity. --Random Reviews
---...the sound that seems to work best for Vibrant Green is dark and brooding. --Left off the Dial
---It's so refreshing to find young musicians with such a handle on creativity and imagination. --C.W., Cornerstone Mag.

Vibrant Green was formed in 1995 by three brothers, Jonny, Joah, and Stephen Tunnell in the small coastal town of Swan Quarter, North Carolina. The three moved to Pittsboro, NC, in 1999, drawn to the flourishing musical environment of the area. The band self-released their self-titled debut in 2000 and created a healthy buzz in the Chapel Hill-Durham scene. Stephen's contrast of powerful wailing and introspective murmurs adapt well to both the intense clamor of the band's rocks songs as well as the hushed radiance of their acoustic work. In the summer of 2002, Vibrant Green began work on their sophomore effort at Overdub Lane in Durham with producer John Plymale (Superchunk, Squirrell Nut Zippers). During the course of recording, complications forced the band to take a hiatus. Jonny left the band and joined The Never on drums in the winter of 2002. During the nearly year-long hiatus, Joah joined The Never as well. He also recorded his debut solo EP, After the Party, for Trekky's infamous Singer/Songwriter Series. Stephen spent the time off producing records for Trekky fellows Westfalia and the Beauregards as well as continuing work on his solo career, still operating under the name Vibrant Green. Joah and Stephen reunited in August of 2003 and began playing shows again. In the Summer of 2005, the three Tunnells finally joined together to finish what they started three years before, their second album, titiled Artless Yet Excellent which was released on Trekky in January 2006.

Hi, Stephen! -Saw you online, and realized it's been a long time since i've stopped by here. -Music still sounds as refreshing as ever. And while I'm a big fan of vibrant green, given the weather forecast for today, i'm a bigger fan of glistening white. ...just for a while.
I've just begun a music review radio program with my son, Joe Norkus of Embarrassing Fruits band, on WCOM in Carrboro (the cooler side of Chapel Hill), after two trial runs we are now on schedule for the next 12 months, Sundays, noon to one.
Dec. 14th. was our official debut as The Joe & Joe Local Show, we interviewed Josh Kimbrough of the band Butterflies, he played an uplugged live set, as well.
I look forward to all of my MySpace friends logging in on the web to listen, here's the link:
I listened to 'Artless' today. That really is an amazing album guys. No matter how many times I hear those songs I still enjoy them as much as I did many years ago. Totally worth the wait. I wanted to ask, are you performing as a three-piece at TRKfest? I'll be there either way, I was just curious.
