Influences
THEORETICALLY various sociopolitical theories of the era, wizarding and muggle, but in reality it all probably had more to do with usual teenage angst and the craze for trying to go and watch Gilbert and Sullivan without Phineas Nigellus noticing. He always did.
Sounds Like
chamber music and musical theatre put into some kind of blender; records that Mundugus Fletcher thought were rubbish
Recently, various vintage magical recordings have been turning up around the UK, mouldering in wizards and witches' attics and also in a very odd shop in Knockturn Alley. We at the Society for the Preservation of Magical Music are dedicated to collecting these recordings and hope that both Muggles and Magical Folk alike will find them enlightening and perhaps even entertaining.
History:
Hogwarts at the end of the 19th Century was in a precarious state. Under the leadership of Phineas Nigellus, discipline and marks had never been higher and academic and sporting clubs were flourishing. However, there was a dark undercurrent to many goings on, and under a member of the Black family relations between houses, and between purebloods and everyone else, became strained. There was also no musical outlet for any of the students. A small group of rebels formed a secret society. The identity of the musicians is lost to the ages, but it appears that it was a project between many different students over a period of several years.
The group set out in 1895 calling themselves "Students For Furtherment of Social Justice and House Unity Through Musical Endeavour" but that did not stick, for obvious reasons. This remained the official name, but many members, especially the younger girls, tended to call it the "Victorian Wizarding Romance Society" due to the preponderance of terrible love songs in the anonymous lyric donation boxes set up in each Common Room.
According to the scraps of log book that we have so far uncovered, the society was finally dissolved in 1900 as all the original members had left Hogwarts and those who remained felt disillusioned by the lack of effect they were having on the school, due to the student body's failure to produce any suitably rousing political anthems.
Any information regarding the identity of the musicians or the lyricists is greatly appreciated!

Archivists of the Society for the Preservation of Magical Music:
Just checked up on Ruby's Great-Grandmother - she would have been too young to be at Hogwarts at the time 'Proper Young Ladies' was approximately recorded.
We love 'proper young ladies' - we think it may have been sung by Ruby's great grandmother, Elsie Fortuna Pallett, as she always used to tell us stories about her days at Hogwarts.
Unfortunatly she has passed on now, but we're looking into it ;)
For a moment I thought I was on the Split Seven Ways page. Your voices sound very much alike. :) Thanks for adding me! I'm really enjoying your songs. ^_^
i can't seem to stop listening to this stuff! i've been doing my research too, old wizarding albums and artists, i'll send you some of the information i've found.
