The Vikings were a nordic group of traders, colonizers, and explorers. They came from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden and spread through Europe and the North Atlantic during the Viking Age, AD 800-1050. As well as inhabiting Scandinavia, the Vikings established settlements in Ireland, Britain, Iceland, Greenland, and in the Shetland, Orkney, and Faeroe Islands. They became the ancestors of such groups as the Normans of Normandy. The Viking legacy lives on today in Norway in local dialects and customs, folktales, oral traditions, and in the genetic make-up of modern Norwegians.
