The Danish Norwegian brothers John and Christian Wolthers grew up on the subtropical coastline of Santos and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. John, the older brother began to surf in 1967 inspired by an article about surfing he read on the National Geographic Magazine. Christian followed a year later at the age of 10. During the first couple of years, the brothers shared boards which were either imported from the USA or brought in from Rio de Janeiro where surfing was better established in these early years. By the early seventies, the Wolthers brothers needed more boards and with different shapes, this need, led them to start shaping and glassing their own boards. Christian started to compete on local and national championships where his top ranking positions brought a lot of demand from other surfers on the boards he was shaping and wining championships with. The brothers started to produce surfboards commercially in 1973 and because they were known as "The Viking Brothers" The name, Viking Surfboards became a natural decision. Viking Surfboards built a solid reputation in Brazil for more than 10 years, John the big wave rider sold the boards in Rio de Janeiro while Christian shaped, completed and managed the company. By 1983, the company was closed due to a stronger commitment of the brothers with the inherited family business. Both brothers and now their families continued surfing and have always lived the spirit, Christian remained shaping only for the closest friends and family. In 1997, Christian and his family moved to Florida - USA and by 2001 he decided to re-active Viking Surfboards in the US and in Brazil. Today, viking Surfboards Inc., USA and Viking Surfboards, Brazil produce surfboards, accessories, surf style clothing exporting these products to various international destinations. The next generation of Wolthers is also involved with the company on both hemispheres while also surfing waves from the Americas to Europe, Asia and Australia.
