Passionné par le Blues,Vincent Bucher apprend l’Harmonica à l’age de 15 ans en écoutant Big Walter Horton,Sonny Boy Williamson et Little Walter.
Un an plus tard il commence à jouer dans les rues et les metros de Paris. C’est là qu’il est remarqué par l’harmoniciste américain Sugar Blue qui l’invite sur scène à de nombreuses reprises et lui donne son premier « kit » micro et amplificateur. Dans la rue il rencontre le musicien franco-malgache Tao Ravao avec qui débutera une longue collaboration. Par l’intermédiaire de Sugar Blue,Vincent s’associe ensuite avec le guitariste Manuel Galvin en fondant le groupe Hot’Cha qui l’initiera au circuit des clubs et des concerts. Au sein de Hot Cha Vincent accompagnera plusieurs bluesmen américains tels Eddie Shaw,Jimmy Johnson ,Melvin Taylor à l’occasion de festivals et de tournées.
A la même époque il fait la connaissance du légendaire Louisiana Red qui l’invite à jouer avec lui tout un concert au New Morning.Cette collaboration avec le bluesman durera, par intermittence plusieurs années .
Parallèlement à Hot’Cha qui assure régulièrement les 1ère parties de Luther Allison,Paul Personne,Otis Rush etc…Vincent commence à jouer régulièrement avec Patrick Verbecke et il a même l’occasion d’enregistrer « tombé pour la France » avec Etienne Daho.
Durant cette période il rencontre Frank Goldwasser et l’harmoniciste américain Matthew Skoller ;deux amitiés solides tout au long de sa carrière.
En 1985, Vincent entreprend son premier voyage aux USA . Il rejoint d’abord Frank Goldwasser sur la cote ouest et aura l’occasion de se produire avec des artistes tels Sonny Rhodes,Troyce Keys, Boz Sgazz , Mark Hummel etc…
Il retrouve ensuite Matt Skoller à Millwaukee et à Chicago où il découvre la scène légendaire du blues en « jammant » avec Sunnyland Slim,Billy Branch,Big Time Sarah et Magic Slim entre autres.
De retour à Paris , Vincent ,fasciné par les origines du blues, s’intéresse aux différentes musiques africaines et « cousines » telles le reggae .Il s’associe avec le grand guitariste malgache Solo Razaf au sein du groupe Zouma qui combine Rhythm&Blues et musiques tropicales.Il joue et enregistre avec différents artistes africains tels Janet N’ Dyaye, Tom Diakité et Henri Dikongué.Il part jouer en Guyane et aux Antilles avec le groupe de reggae Krucial Age.
A la fin des années 80 Bill Deraime le contacte pour remplacer JJ Milteau dans son groupe. Vincent tournera 5 ans avec Bill et enregistrera avec lui 2 albums : « Louisiane » et le fameux « Live ».Avec Patrick Verbecke il partira à Memphis pour le « Memphis in may blues festival »où il rencontrera Ruby Wilson et Mojo Bruford avec qui il se produira.
Vincent intègre ensuite le groupe du bluesman Eddie C Campbell qui tournera en Europe pendant un an et demi.
Avec Tao Ravao il enregistre l’ album « Love call »,fusion « blues malgache »qui amènera le duo à tourner non seulement en France mais aussi au Canada ,à Austin Texas et dans plus de 15 pays d’ Afrique australe et orientale.3 autres albums suivront par la suite : « Tany manga » « hé là bas » et « Soa ».
Avec le guitariste Larry Skoller Vincent monte le projet « Chicago nights »qui lui donnera l’occasion d’accompagner bon nombre de légendes du blues telles :Carlos Johnson,Lynn Jordan,Little Smokey Smothers et Charlie Love avec qui il enregistre et coproduit le disque « Love of the Blues »
En 1996 Vincent fait une rencontre importante en la personne du chanteur guitariste malien Lobi Traoré. Il se rend au Mali et au Burkina Faso à plusieurs reprises pour jouer et enregistrer avec Lobi (album « Duga « )
Toujours avec Lobi ,Traoré Vincent effectue une longue tournée des festivals « folk » et « world music » au Canada,tournée qui se terminera par une « jam session »unique reunissant ,entre autres,Lobi,Vincent et le bluesman légendaire Robert Lockwood junior !
Début 98 il part avec Tao Ravao et Lobi Traoré pour un long périple musical en Afrique de l’est qui lui permettra de cotoyer de grands artistes originaire du Kenya, d’Ethiopie,du Zimbabwe etc…
Puis il participe à l’album de Paul Personne « instantanés »,il se rend ensuite à Chicago pour collaborer à la réalisation de l’album de Matthew Skoller : « shoulder to the wind »( suivra ensuite « these kind of blues » avec Lurrie bell,vamp samuels etc…)
Par l’intermédiaire de Skoller il fait la connaissance de Charlelie Couture avec qui il jouera régulièrement dès 2000 et participera à 4 albums : « soudés soudés », « 109 », « double vue » et « newyorcoeur »
En 2005 de retour d’une tournée africaine Vincent collabore avec un ami de longue date ,le grand artiste malien Boubacar Traoré pour l’album « kongo magni » ;depuis lors il l’accompagne régulièrement sur scène au cours de tournées et festivals partageant notamment l’affiche avec Lucky Peterson,Youssou N’Dour,Zachary Richard etc..
Parallèlement à toutes ces aventures Vincent n’a jamais cessé de se produire en clubs et festivals blues en tant que leader,chanteur,harmoniciste insufflant son énergie et son expérience à un répertoire blues intense et bien senti !
At fifteen years old, Vincent Bucher discovered the harmonica. A year and a half later he was playing on the streets of Paris when an American harp player from Harlem, New York stopped to listen to the fledgling musician. Sugar Blue, an already seasoned professional would have an immediate and profound effect on Vincent's future. He invited the youngster to his concert that night and called Vincent on stage for his first concert performance. After six months of tutoring from Sugar, Vincent was ready to join the ranks of the thriving Paris blues scene.
During his seventeenth year he met two local guitarists who would be important collaborators in the next few years: Manu Galvin and, most importantly, Tao Ravao , a young disciple of Homesick James whose mother is Malgash (from Madagascar) and whose Father is French. This was also the same year Sugar Blue introduced Vincent to the legendary Luther Allison. Vincent often had the opportunity to join Luther on stage for impromptu jam sessions. The following year, he met Delta blues guitarist, singer and song writer, Louisiana Red at the famed Parisian club The New Morning . Vincent made it backstage where the bluesman asked him to play a note on his harp to help him tune his guitar. They played for just a couple of minutes together and Red invited Vincent to play the entire gig with him. Vincent would accompany Red often over the next decade. Tao Ravao and Vincent took their music to the streets of Paris while he and Manu Galvin (then guitarist for Sugar Blue) formed a group they called Hotcha . This group backed up many touring bluesmen including : Jimmy Johnson , Eddie C. Campbell, Eddie Shaw , Melvin Taylor , and Sonny Rhodes .
In 1985 Vincent visited the U. S. for the first time. His first stop was Oakland , CA where he stayed with old friend and colleague , the newly- expatriated Paris Slim. Here he jammed with Boz Scaggs , Ron Thompson , Sonny Lane , Mark Hummel and Troyce Keys. Vincent then went to visit Milwaukee-based harpist Matthew Skoller. For a month the two twenty-three-year-old friends jammed all over the Chicago and Milwaukee area blues scene without a break. Among others,Vincent jammed with Sunnyland Slim , Sugar Blue, Billy Branch , Big Time Sarah , John Watkins , Robert Covington , Bob Stroger , Steve Freund. Vincent was awe struck by how rooted the musicians in Chicago were; the history of Chicago Blues seemed to resound in every note that was played and sung. From the elders of the music to the newcomers there was a rooted-ness that Vincent longed to have in his music, life and culture. But how? Blues was not indigenous to Paris nor was it francophone. Bucher realized that just as young white Americans had grown up surrounded by the blues, their French counterparts had grown up surrounded by a wealth of African music and musicians from all over Africa. The often brilliant (and francophone) African musicians would soon be moved by this young player and he would become one of the first harmonica masters to add this little instrument to the music of Madagascar , Mali , Cote D'Ivoire , Zaire , Cameroon , and others .
At the same time, his life long musical partner, Tao Ravao was beginning to study the native instruments of his mother's homeland (Madagascar), the Valiha and Kabosy. Simultaneously Vincent began to study the rudiments and principals of African rhythms and melody with an extremely accomplished Malgash guitarist named Solo Razaf, guitarist and band leader for Miriam Makeba. Eventually Tao and Vincent formed a duo that would explore Malgasy and its relationship to its American offspring : the Blues. The countries in Africa Vincent has toured are Mali, The Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Africa, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Reunion Island, and the French West Indies.
Among the French musicians Vincent has accompanied are Etienne Daho, Bill Deraime, Paul Personne, Patrick Verbeck and Charlelie Couture. Charlelie Couture hired Vincent as part of his band in 1998 and Vincent remains a permanent member of his group.
An exciting front man and accomplished vocalist, Vincent often tours with his own blues ensemble playing and singing in the tradition of the Chicago blues that first inspired him to play music. With literally hundreds of thousands of road miles behind him, and over 25 years of experience, Vincent Bucher has become one of the most unique and masterful harmonica musicians alive. Combining the techniques of the old blues masters with new techniques he developed to tailor the instrument to other musical genres has earned him the moniker of innovator.
