Vinh Bui Studio's Interests
|
| General | I can be interested in almost anything, which is kind of unusual for postgrad with loads of useless esoteric knowledge. The previous said, if you truly know me, I can be as sharp critically as a bunker busting smart missile. The irony however is that those things are usually meant for dictators very much like myself, alas.
I am, truth be told, a very generous person, especially if I'm impressed. So Impress me. | | Music | David Bowie, Guns'n'Roses, The Magnetic Fields, Yo La Tango, Bright Eyes, Aphex Twin, Michael Jackson, The Faint, Nirvana, Ladytron, The Beatles, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Adult, Miss Kittin and the Hacker, Pulp, REM, The Postal Service, The Libertines, M.I.A., Bloc Party, Brian Eno, The Who, Secret Machines, The Rolling Stones, Of Montreal, Peaches, Nine Inch Nails, Franz Ferdinand | | Movies | Blade Runner, Casablanca, anything by Fassbinder or Werner Herzog, Vertigo, It's a Wonderful Life, Psycho, Fire Walk with Me, Blue Velvet, Alien, Aliens, Terminator 1 and 2, Ghost World, Chinatown, Punch Drunk Love, The Pianist, Underground, Breathless, Last Tango in Paris, Ferris Bueller's Day Off | | Television | Twin Peaks, The Sopranos, Robotech, The Simpsons, The Family Guy | | Books | Remembrance of Things Past (all six), The Man without Qualities, Lolita, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Prince, Hollywood Babylon, The Andy Warhol Diaries | | Heroes | Marcel Proust, Piet Mondrian, Robert Mangold, Basquiat, Robert Musil, Kafka, Dennis Cooper, J.D. Vinh Bui Studio's Blurbs |
About me:
I'm a collective of one who doesn't believe in many things besides art, movies, music, literature and power. The first four I'll pointificate at abundance, however, the last I'll only discuss over champagne and some truly good columbian. Here's my newest bio, comments are very welcome:
Vinh Bui is an artist working primarily in the field of painting. His paintings
aesthetically range from being minimal to geometrically baroque. Some of the
minimal paintings may only consist of a few intersecting lines and a very limited
palette, such as Swingbend, 2001. Other paintings, like Roger That, 2004 and
the Spice Series, 1999 are dense paintings that are derived from the look and
feel of certain technological abstractions, such as broken LCDs and scrambled
pornography. The subjects of these paintings seem quite varied, ranging from
the figurative to the purely abstract, sometimes adding bits and pieces from
technology and its abstract field of vision.
Vinh grew up the son of first generation Vietnamese refugees in Wisconsin,
a region of the United States that is primarily known for its dairy products. However,
in actuality, the state has a very progressive history and educational system.
After graduating grom Kimberly High School, he went to the University of Wisconsin
at Madison. There he majored in art and psychology and stayed an extra year
to focus on his painting. The university was where Vinh developed his burgeoning
aesthetic sensibilities, using oil on canvas to explore his fascination with media
and technology. Using the computer to capture clips and alter images, Vinh was
trying to develop painting styles that would hopefully turn that fascination with
media and technology into an art. In the fall of 1998 he sent his portfolio to the
Art Center College of Design. The Fine Art Graduate Department accepted him
into what was then a very well respected and competitive program.
In the summer of 1999, Vinh became progressively sick and developed
allergies he never before had due to painting extensively with oils and all the
toxins involved therein. The fall semester of 1999 at Art Center had him adjusting
to three complex situations, a new metropolis that had triple the
population of his whole state, a new school that was very much theory-driven
and a brand new medium, acrylic paint. After a few Machiavellian episodes of
theory-caused soul searching and a whirlwind of meetings and critiques, Vinh fell
into a groove and found that painting on transparencies held his fascination
materially and conceptually. The rest of his career at Art Center had him making
graceful and minimal compositions on acrylic glass that were somewhat
installation-like. Vinh would sometimes call his shows, painting installations
because of the transparent nature of the work and the use of projection and
reflection onto the walls of the gallery.
Since his graduation in the fall of 2002, Vinh has continued to work on transparencies,
primarily acrylic glass and polycarbonate. The work has, however,
become less minimal, and more complex and varied. The colors are looser and
the subject matter ranges from old Soviet Union propaganda posters to broken
LCD screens. His aesthetic of using multiple layers, the front and back of acrylic
glass or polycarbonate, to activate the gallery wall with colored glowing shadows
has become both more refined and contradictorily, more adventurous. Vinhs
paintings explore the actual physical space of a painting, all the while complicating
that space with compositions that create the illusions of another space formed
by color and lines. Its an investigation of the abstract that is materially concerned
while being conceptually interested, but more importantly,
conceptually free.
